THE LATE LATE SHOW

Post by Kitkat on Sat 31 Jan 2015, 22:52

First broadcast on RTE television on 2nd April 1965, The Late Late Show is the world's longest-running chat show - and the first and longest-serving presenter, Gay Byrne was/is a national institution.

In 2010, The Irish Times said Byrne was "unquestionably the most influential radio and television man in the history of the Irish State".    In 2011, he was approached to become President of Ireland but declined to run, despite topping opinion polls.

This thread will remember some of the people interviewed on the show down through the years - starting with the inimitable Spike Milligan:

The Meaning of Life - Gaybo interviews ...

Post by Kitkat on Wed 04 Feb 2015, 12:05

Oh yes, Gay's face ... priceless!
That interview is actually from Gaybo's more recent TV series, The Meaning of Life, where he interviews various personalities with the specific purpose of hearing about their own individual thoughts on "the meaning of life".

The Meaning of Life with (Uncle) Gay Byrne has recently made a welcome return to TV screens.

As many of you know, Gay Byrne always asks his guests what they would say to God if they ever met him/her/it at the pearly gates of heaven.

Stephen Fry is a staunch atheist and his answer is very powerful as seen by the startled expression on Gay Byrne's face.

The longest answer to that question that Gaybo has ever gotten ...

Bob Geldoff had a few choice words of his own to put across on the subject also:

I wonder what Bob Geldof's daughter Peaches answer to that question would be if she had been interviewed on the meaning of life.  In her short life she changed her beliefs as often as she changed her hairstyles.

John Bonner on Thelema:
'You could call us a sex cult in a way, because we recognise, accept and adore the whole process which goes towards making tangible the previously intangible.'

Huh?  scratchhead

Is it just me that needs a translation?

Dylan Moran  (1999 or 2000)?

One of the comments to that video says:
That wasn't Dylan's first time on the Late Late. The first was when he did a stand-up routine on a segment featuring young up-and-coming Irish comedians and he died an absolute death. He was funny but he got zero laughs. It was car crash TV. Would love to find a clip of it somewhere

Must try and fish out that clip and get it up here.

(The Tommy Tiernan interview mentioned will be next up here)

Enjoying these postings very much. Some great memories in there.
What year was Tommy Tiernan's first appearance on the show? Pi--ed as a newt! lololol
I saw Dylan Moran in Milton Keynes a couple of years ago. Black Books is high up my list of favourite TV.

I wonder if that caller had kids of his own. If he did they probably weren't allowed to watch the show.
