Summary for Sunday, 30th January 2022

    Good morning

Welcome to our daily coronavirus update.

A quick look at today so far:

    • The Winter Olympics in Beijing have been hit by 34 new infections among athletes and officials.

    • Poland’s short track medal hopeful Natalia Maliszewska is among those who tested positive.
Of the total infections, 23 were among new airport arrivals, while 11 were people already in the “closed loop” bubble that separates event personnel from the public in an effort to curb the spread of infections.  Maliszewska is the eighth Polish athlete to have tested positive and has gone into isolation, the Polish Olympic Committee said on Sunday. She joins infected fellow speedskaters Natalia Czerwonka, Magdalena Czyszczoń and Marek Kania in isolation.

    • Beijing Games organisers have warned of more cases in coming days as the Chinese capital enforces stringent measures, restricting movement and contact of any Games participant with the local population.

    • Meanwhile, in the UK, the NHS has announced it begin offering vaccinations to children aged between five and 11 who are most at risk from the virus.

    • Britain has been slower than some other countries in offering the shots to five- to 11-year-olds, and is not planning to vaccinate the age group more broadly unlike countries such as the US and Israel.

    • NHS England said children in the cohort who were in a clinical risk group or who live with someone who is immunosuppressed would be able to get a first jab, in line with advice issued last month by the Joint Committee on Vaccine and Immunisation.

A round-up reminder of the main coronavirus events over the past 24 hours:

    • The UK government reported its lowest new case figures for more than a month on Saturday, with 72,727 infections. The figures don’t include Scotland’s case numbers, as figures for new positive PCR cases are not available at the weekend.
    • Chile has broken its record for daily cases for the fourth day in a row, with more than 29,000 confirmed in the last 24 hours.
    • Ukraine has marked the 100,000th person to die from Covid-19 in the country since the start of the pandemic.
    • Turkey’s health minister Fahrettin Koca said the worst of the pandemic was over, despite the country joining others in breaking its daily case record on Saturday. A total of 94,783 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours.
    • Italy reported 137,147 new cases on Saturday.
    • Some schools in the UK have reintroduced mask wearing in classrooms, in the same week where the government dropped it as part of its official rules.
    • France has reported 332,398 new Covid-19 cases, the fifth day in a row the figures have fallen.

Germany reports 118,970 new infections and a further 59 deaths

Germany’s Robert Koch Institute has reported 118,970 new infections, a 39% increase on last week’s figures. It also reported that a further 59 people died after testing positive for the virus.

Russia reports record 121,228 new cases

Russia reported a record 121,228 new daily cases of the virus. This is up from Saturday’s total of 113,122. The government coronavirus taskforce also reported 617 deaths in the last 24 hours.

In the UK, attempts by the National Crime Agency (NCA) to investigate fraudulent Covid handouts were resisted by the Treasury

The Sunday Telegraph quotes a source saying:
The Treasury effectively said, ‘butt out of this’”.
Another source said they believed that the move was designed to prevent embarrassment about the scale of fraud involving public funds.
The story follows the resignation of Lord Agnew over the government’s decision to write off £4.3bn in fraudulent Covid loans.

Concern as Republicans push to make dubious Covid cure prescriptions easier

    Eric Berger - The Guardian
Republican state lawmakers across the US have proposed – and in some cases passed – legislation they say keeps the government from interfering with doctors who want to prescribe ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine to help prevent and treat Covid-19.
But those treatments have not proven effective at preventing or treating Covid and infectious disease experts see the bills as examples of rightwing lawmakers politicising medicine – a trend that is increasing as the pandemic drags on in America into its third year amid an increasingly fraught political atmosphere.
And so it goes with the latest suspect Covid-19 treatment that has become about more than just a drug, but rather about whether to trust established public health organisations or doctors who stray from their guidelines, and podcast and cable news hosts.

Beijing recorded its highest number of new Covid-19 cases for a year and a half on Sunday

As the Chinese capital gears up to host the Winter Olympics, AFP reports:
China will hold the Games in a strict “closed-loop” bubble as part of its zero-Covid strategy of targeted lockdowns, border restrictions and lengthy quarantines.
The approach has helped the world’s second-largest economy keep new infections far lower than many other countries, but it is battling local outbreaks in several cities as well as in the Olympic bubble.
The upcoming Lunar New Year - China’s biggest national holiday - presents a further challenge as millions of people return to their hometowns and mingle with family and friends.
Beijing’s tally of 20 new cases on Sunday was the city’s highest since June 2020, according to the National Health Commission (NHC).
City authorities have locked down some housing compounds, while officials in Fengtai district - where most of Sunday’s infections were detected - have begun testing around 2 million people for the virus.
The Olympics bubble separates everyone involved in the Games from the wider Chinese population to curb the risk of infections leaking out.
The estimated 60,000 people inside the bubble are subject to daily testing.
On Sunday, organisers reported 34 new cases related to the Games, bringing the total to more than 200 since the bubble was sealed on 4 January.

Thailand has reported a further 8,444 new Covid cases and further 12 deaths from virus

Cambodia has reported a further 57 cases.

Taiwan’s vice president, William Lai, used his final day in the United States to repeat an accusation that China blocked the island from obtaining vaccines last year

    Reuters reports:
Last May, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen accused China of blocking a deal with Germany’s BioNTech SE for vaccines, after Beijing offered the shots to the island via a Chinese company just as Taiwan was dealing with a rise in domestic infections.
Beijing has denied trying to stop Taiwan getting vaccines, and also offered Chinese-developed shots which the island rejected, citing safety concerns.
China claims Taiwan as its own territory.
Less than two weeks after Tsai’s comments, Senator Tammy Duckworth, visiting Taipei with two other US lawmakers, said the United States would donate vaccine doses to Taiwan.
Speaking to the Illinois Democrat during a stop over in San Francisco while on the way back to Taiwan from Honduras, Lai offered his thanks.
Lai said he was “especially grateful to her last year when Taiwan was unable to obtain vaccines due to the China factor”, Taiwan’s presidential office said, citing the de facto US ambassador to Washington Hsiao Bi-khim, who is accompanying Lai.
In Beijing, China’s foreign ministry said Lai’s accusation was “total fiction”, calling it a “malicious slandering and smearing of the true face of the mainland”.
Taiwan eventually began receiving the BioNTech vaccines, jointly developed with Pfizer, in September.

Ed Davey has accused the Metropolitan Police of “undermining” the public’s trust over the Sue Gray report into Downing Street lockdown parties.
Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday Morning show, the leader of the Liberal Democrats said:
:Left Quotes:  I have huge respect for rank-and-file police officers who put their lives on the line to keep us safe.
For them to do their job, the public have to have trust and confidence in them. But the way the Met has handled this, I think, is undermining that.

Labour’s Lisa Nandy said Gray’s report should be published “in full” this week.
    She told the programme:
:Left Quotes:  If (Boris Johnson) won’t put an end to this circus and this stasis in government … then that report has to come out in full so that the people can judge for themselves.

    Polling has begun in Portugal

Polling has begun in Portugal in a parliamentary election marred by fears of a low turnout due to record coronavirus infections.
    Reuters reports:
At the University of Lisbon, staff outnumbered mostly elderly voters, with signs on the walls asking people to wear a mask, observe social distancing and to use their own pen.
Some even wore gloves for extra protection.
“I have been vaccinated, and I haven’t had Covid yet... But I felt very safe,” said Maria Odete, 73, adding that the election race appeared too close to produce a stable government capable of bringing positive change.

The government has allowed those infected to leave isolation and cast ballots in person, recommending that they do so in the last hour before polling stations close at 7pm.
Over a tenth of Portugal’s 10 million people are estimated to be isolating because of Covid. As in many European countries, infections have spiked lately, stoked by the Omicron variant, although widespread vaccination has kept deaths and hospitalisations lower than in earlier waves.
The election is wide open as the centre-left ruling Socialists have lost much of their lead in opinion polls to the main opposition party, the centre-right Social Democrats, and neither is likely to win a stable majority.
Low turnout could make projections unreliable, analysts say. Abstention was already record at 51% in the 2019 general election before the pandemic.

South Korea reports record 17,532 new cases

New cases in South Korea’s have hit a record 17,532 as the highly infectious Omicron variant spreads, the Yonap news agency reports.
The country reported 17,532 new infections, including 17,303 local cases, raising the total caseload to 828,637, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said.
The daily count broke the record for the sixth consecutive day, spiking from 8,570 on Tuesday.
Authorities had earlier said Saturday’s tally reached 17,542 but corrected the figure to 17,526, citing erroneous reporting.

Officials in Beijing have sealed off several residential communities in the city’s northern district after two new Covid cases were found

    AP reports:
Residents in the Anzhenli neighbourhood in Chaoyang district were sealed off on Saturday, and will not be allowed to leave their compound.
Beijing is on high alert as it prepares to host the Olympic Games opening on Friday.
While the cases are low compared to other countries in the region, China has double down on its “zero-tolerance” policy, which includes breaking the chain of transmission as soon as it is found.
The city is also setting up 19 points in the area to test residents every day until Friday, officials said at a briefing on the pandemic, according to state-backed Beijing News.

Iran has announced that the number of its new cases have almost doubled in the last 24 hours from 11,731 on Saturday to 21,996 on Sunday.

Iran is in the grip of a fourth wave of the virus as the highly-infectious Omicron variant takes hold. Iran’s health ministry also announced a further 44 new Covid deaths.

Algeria has reported its first case of the BA.2 subvariant of the Omicron strain of the virus

    Reuters reports, citing Ennahar TV:
Last week the health ministry in Denmark said the BA.2 variant was more contagious than original strain of Omicron.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family have had to leave their home after thousands of people descended on Canada’s capital Ottawa to protest against Covid mandates.
Truckers drove into the city on Saturday as part of a self-titled “freedom convoy” which began as a protest against vaccine mandates, masks and lockdowns.
Some parked on the grounds of the National War Memorial and danced on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, others carried signs and flags with swastikas and some used the statue of Canadian hero Terry Fox to display an anti-vaccine statement.
Protestors compared vaccine mandates to fascism, one truck carried a Confederate flag and many carried exple
The statue of Fox, a national hero who lost a leg to bone cancer as a youngster, was draped with an upside down Canadian flag and a sign that said “mandate freedom.”
Local media reported that Prime Minister Trudeau and his family were escorted out of their home and taken to an undisclosed location in the capital for security purposes.
One of Trudeau’s children has Covid-19 and the prime minister has been isolating and working remotely in recent days.
The convoy of truckers and others prompted police to prepare for the possibility of violence and warn residents to avoid downtown.

A top Parliament security official advised lawmakers to lock their doors amid reports their private homes may be targeted.
Some are, in part, protesting a new rule that took effect on Jan 15 requiring truckers entering Canada be fully immunized against the coronavirus.
The United States has imposed the same requirement on truckers entering their country.
The Canadian Trucking Alliance said a great number of the protesters have no connection to the trucking industry, adding they have a separate agenda to push. The alliance notes the vast majority of drivers are vaccinated.
The organisers of the protest have called for the forceful elimination of all Covid-19 restrictions and vaccine mandates and some called for the removal of Trudeau.
The Shepherds of Good Hope, which has a soup kitchen for the homeless in Ottawa, reported staff and volunteers “experienced harassment from convoy protestors seeking meals from our soup kitchen. The individuals were given means to defuse the conflict.”

Pregnant journalist denied re-entry to New Zealand offered refuge by Taliban

Charlotte Bellis has been denied re-entry to New Zealand. (Twitter)

A pregnant New Zealand journalist denied re-entry to her home country to give birth due to strict COVID-19 regulations said she has been offered refuge by the Afghan Taliban.
“This just feels like such a breach of trust,” Charlotte Bellis told Radio New Zealand on Sunday from Kabul.
Bellis had been working for Al Jazeera in Afghanistan, but said she didn't realize she was pregnant until she was at the media company’s headquarters in Doha, Qatar.
It is illegal to be pregnant and unmarried in Qatar, so Bellis kept her pregnancy secret as she prepared to return to New Zealand.
Upon being told she did not qualify for an exemption under New Zealand’s strict COVID-19 border controls, Bellis said she called senior Taliban contacts and was told she could give birth there.
“We're happy for you, you can come and you won’t have a problem,” Bellis said in an interview about what the Taliban had told her.
They also said, “Don't worry. Everything will be fine,” she told the New Zealand Herald.
“In my time of need, the New Zealand government said you're not welcome here.”
“When the Taliban offers you – a pregnant, unmarried woman – safe haven, you know your situation is messed up.”
Bellis, who once questioned the Taliban about what they would do to ensure the rights of women and girls, said it was “brutally ironic” she was now asking the same question of her own government.
After going public with her situation, and involving lawyers, Bellis said she had been contacted by New Zealand officials who said her rejected application was under review.
The governments COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins said in a statement that he had asked officials to check whether the proper procedures had been followed in Bellis’ case, “which appeared at first sight to warrant further explanation.”
Faced with an outbreak of the omicron variant, New Zealand recently scrapped plans to ease entry for returning nationals and instead closed its borders – except for emergency cases - to anyone without an existing quarantine booking.

Harry and Meghan express 'concerns' to Spotify over misinformation

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle launched a partnership with Spotify in 2020.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have expressed their "concerns" to Spotify over Covid-19 misinformation on the platform, joining a growing group of personalities putting pressure on the streaming service amid a dispute about Joe Rogan's controversial podcast.
The pair first raised the issue last April and have continued to urge Spotify to root out misinformation, a spokesperson for their foundation, Archewell, said on Sunday.
Their invention comes after Neil Young and Joni Mitchell both asked Spotify to pull their music from the platform, objecting to its popular "Joe Rogan Experience" podcast in which the host has made frequent false and inaccurate claims surrounding vaccines and Covid-19.
"Last April, our co-founders began expressing concerns to our partners at Spotify about the all too real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on its platform," an Archewell spokesperson said in a statement. "We have continued to express our concerns to Spotify to ensure changes to its platform are made to help address this public health crisis."
"We look to Spotify to meet this moment and are committed to continuing our work together as it does," the spokesperson added. The statement did not specifically mention Rogan's show.
The Sussexes are among Spotify's most notable audio personalities, having announced an exclusive partnership with the service in December 2020. In a news release, Spotify said the pair "will host and produce podcasts that build community through shared experience, narratives, and values."
The multi-year partnership with Spotify includes numerous programs, some hosted and others produced by the duke and duchess.
Their reach is dwarfed by Rogan's popular show, which has long been a hit with listeners but has drawn scorn from the scientific community.
Earlier this month, a group of more than 250 scientists, doctors and nurses penned an open letter to Spotify condemning the streamer for platforming Rogan and calling on Spotify to warn its listeners about misinformation. The host has suggested that healthy young people should not necessarily be vaccinated against Covid-19, and a recent episode with Jordan Peterson was also mocked for airing misinformation about climate change.
"Since the inception of Archewell, we have worked to address the real-time global misinformation crisis," a spokesperson for the foundation said. "Hundreds of millions of people are affected by the serious harms of rampant mis- and disinformation every day."
CNN has contacted Spotify for comment, but has yet to receive a response.

Covid-19: China reports 34 new cases among Olympics-related personnel

    Kaleej Times
Thirty-four new Covid-19 infections were detected among Olympics-related personnel, the Beijing 2022 Winter Games organising committee said on Sunday, including Poland’s short track medal hopeful Natalia Maliszewska.
Of those, 13 were athletes or team officials who tested positive after arriving at the airport on Saturday.
Of the total infections, 23 were among new airport arrivals, while 11 were people already in the “closed loop” bubble that separates event personnel from the public to try to curb the spread of infections.
The loop allows Games participants to move freely between their accommodations and Olympic venues on official transport, but they are not allowed to move freely in the city. All Games stakeholders, including media and staff, are also tested daily.
Maliszewska is the eighth Polish athlete to have tested positive and has gone into isolation, the Polish Olympic Committee said on Sunday. She joins infected fellow speedskaters Natalia Czerwonka, Magdalena Czyszczon and Marek Kania in isolation.
With the 500m heats set to start on Saturday, Maliszewska is in a race against time to compete. Athletes who test positive and show no symptoms are to be discharged from isolation only if they provide two consecutive negative tests 24 hours apart.
Australia said on Sunday that one member of its delegation had tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival in Beijing and been placed in isolation.
The person took another test on Sunday, which returned a negative result.
“The team member will now undergo a final test tomorrow, which if again negative, will allow the member to return to their usual routine,” the Australian Olympic Committee said in a statement.
Beijing Games organisers have warned of more cases in the coming days as the Chinese capital enforces stringent measures, restricting movement and contact of any Games participant with the local population.
In contrast to many countries seeking to live with Covid-19, China has isolated itself with a zero-tolerance policy, cancelling nearly all international flights. Olympic athletes and others must fly directly into the city on charter flights.

ANKARA, Jan 29 (Reuters) – Turkey has recorded 94,783 new COVID-19 cases in the space of 24 hours, its highest daily figure of the pandemic, health ministry data showed on Saturday, but Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said the worst of the pandemic was over.
Daily cases have surged to record levels in recent weeks with the spread of the Omicron variant, but Koca has said the new variant would reduce the impact of the pandemic because the illness it causes is less severe. read more
“The rise we see in case numbers should not be seen as disheartening. The virus is not at its old strength. The worrying part of the pandemic is over,” Koca said on Twitter.

Kiribati President Taneti Maamau has stated that the government is trying its best to rectify the situation, urging residents to strictly follow COVID-19 protocols to minimise virus-related risks.
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Pacific island nation of Kiribati has jumped to 181, in a sea change from the 36 infections registered earlier this month.
For two years, the archipelago remained one of the last places on our planet to avoid any COVID outbreaks due to the nation's remote location and strict border controls.
In March 2020, the nation of approximately 140,000 people closed its international border, but earlier in January, Kiribati started reopening as the authorities allowed the Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to charter a plane to bring 54 of the island nation's citizens back home.

They included lots of missionaries who left Kiribati before the border closure to spread the faith. More than half of them were COVID-positive despite previously being tested three times in nearby Fiji, and put in quarantine with additional testing when they arrived home.
Kiribati President Taneti Maamau has, meanwhile, pledged that the government is using all its resources to improve the situation, and urged people to get vaccinated. Only 33% of the nation's inhabitants are fully inoculated, while 59% have had at least one dose of a vaccine, according to the online scientific publication Our World in Data.
The rise in COVID cases previously prompted the government to declared a state of disaster, with lockdowns extended on a number of Kiribati's islands, including South Tarawa, Betio, and Buota.

Dr Api Talemaitoga, chair of a network of Indigenous Pacific Island doctors in New Zealand, was cited by ABC News as saying that Kiribati had only several intensive care beds in the entire nation, and that it earlier relied on sending its sickest patients to Fiji or New Zealand for treatment. Talemaitoga added that he said: "Oh, my lord" after hearing the news about a COVID outbreak in Kiribati.
Commenting on the matter, Helen Petousis-Harris, a vaccine expert at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, for her part, asserted that "generally speaking, it's inevitable" and that COVID-19 "will get to every corner of the world".
"It's a matter of buying enough time to prepare and getting as many people vaccinated as possible", she added.

    Djokovic congratulates Nadal

Novak Djokovic has broken his social media silence since being deported from Australia, to congratulate Rafa Nadal on winning the Australian Open.
Fully vaccinated Nadal won a record breaking 21st grand slam title by coming back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev.
Djokovic was deported before the tournament after Australia cancelled his visa on the basis that his presence in Australia might risk “civil unrest” as he is a “talisman of anti-vaccination sentiment”.
Djokovic, who is one behind Nadal with 20 grand slam titles, said his rival’s record was an “amazing achievement”.
