'Cat kicking' TV ad gets most complaints
    Thursday, May 12 2011
A TV advert featuring a cat being kicked into a tree by a blind footballer was the most complained about commercial of last year, the UK's advertising watchdog has revealed.

The ad for betting firm Paddy Power racked up 1,313 complaints, ranking it third on the UK's all-time most complained about TV ads, according to the annual report by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Viewers claimed that the ad was offensive to blind people and could encourage animal cruelty, but the ASA decided not to uphold the complaints after judging that it was "surreal and light-hearted in tone" and so was unlikely to cause serious offence or harm.

That Paddy needs a good kicking.  scratch

    This is the offending advert:

In total, the watchdog received 25,214 complaints about all forms of advertising last year, a 13% drop on 2009's figures. However, TV advertising complaints were up 8% year-on-year.

The second most complained about TV advert was a controversial campaign by Marie Stopes International highlighting abortion and unplanned pregnancy services, which attracted 1,088 official objections.

Again, the ASA dismissed the complaints after judging that the ad was purely aimed at pointing women to the services provided by Marie Stopes, including but not limited to abortion.

In third place was a Department of Energy and Climate Change "Act on CO2" campaign raising awareness of global warming, which generated 939 complaints.

Maybe not in very good taste, but he didn't really kick the cat, thank goodness.
