Guess the word

Post by Stardust on Wed 04 May 2011, 1:20 pm

With the first and last letters,
plus the total number of letters
and a one-word or short definition,
guess the word.

e.g. starts with s, ends with e, 11 letters, clue = sparkle: s---------e
answer : scintillate

New word, starts with e, ends with h, 10 letters, clue = quench: e--------h

OK, I'll give you another clue ...
The word is German in its origin - made up of two German words: One meaning 'damage' or 'harm', the other meaning 'joy'.

Yes, that's the word I'm looking for. It is used in English vocabulary, perhaps rarely, but it's usage is accepted in Scrabble for instance! Most of the words we use in everyday speech are derived from 'foreign' sources anyway, aren't they?

12 letters---starts f ends e means illustration.

Totally stumped on this one. I actually had to dig out my trusty old-faithful, dog-eared, tattered Crossword Lists/Solver ... Thick and heavy, its contents boast "over 200,000 for the crossword fan". On the page for the 13-lettered 'F' words ending in 'e', it lists only 3 words:

FERROCONCRETE - reinforced concrete

FOREKNOWLEDGE - Knowledge or awareness of something before its existence or occurrence; prescience.

FREQUENTATIVE - Expressing or designating repeated action

Illustration doesn't fit with any of these. What can it be?

Feather - did you use your fingers AND thumbs this time? sidestep

EDIT: OOOPS!!!!! I've just noticed ... it's 12 letters I should be looking for, not 13. Embarassed albino

Nope. geek Unless it is fictionalize. Is it?

I did come across a really cute word that I've not heard of before though.
Flittermouse drunken
I like it. Smile I think I'm going to make that my word of the week.
My Lists Book doesn't given the meanings of the words, so I had to look it up.

A flittermouse is a bat. Called also flickermouse, flindermouse, and flintymouse.

Well, exactly! That's why I said I hadn't got it yet ... "fictionalize" (with the American spelling) was the only word listed there that comes anywhere near "an illustration" ... and of course it would not be correct. It's still got me well and truly stumped. Someone better come up with summat soon. giggle

Does 'schadenfreude' come up often in your Scrabble games, Kit-Kat?

Don't know about anyone else, but I find that "First topic message reminder" at the top of each game page confusing and keep thinking I'm still on page 1.
Everyone knows the first post in the thread has the game rules, so what's the point of reminders?

Glad you pointed that out, Stardust. I was finding the same problem myself .. but thought it was just me.
I actually have it set for the first post reminder at top of each page - automatically for every thread, not just the games. (Thought it might be a help but in fact it is more of a hindrance). I'll have another look at it later this evening.

Would it be kneecap (patella), Feather?
I thought it was two words but looked it up and apparently it can also be written as a single word.

Blimey, Feather, had to trawl through a musical site to find out that the thirty-second note is:
demisemiquaver (Phew, that was a very hard one!). As for palingenesis, never heard of it!

Now I'll have to find a very cryptic and obscure word to test your search and find capacities.

11 letters, clue: hash
G---------Y

A settlement

Post by Stardust on Mon 16 May 2011, 8:33 am

Don't know about you others but I find dots and dashes difficult to count. They're just a guide in addition to the number of letters.

A settlement = Rancherie (residential area of an Indian Reserve)

New word: 10 letters, d _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ t
conflicting
