QPR imploding last season was worse than my World Cup blunder, says Rob Green

Goalkeeper says England howler was not the worst moment of his career
Worse was watching QPR implode while sitting powerless on the bench
Green is back as The Hoops No 1 and is enjoying a stellar season

It comes as a surprise to hear Rob Green’s goalkeeping howler for England against the United States in the last World Cup was not the worst moment of his career. Nor was the aftermath of blame, or being relegated from the Premier League with West Ham the following May.

Far worse was the powerlessness of not playing for Queens Park Rangers last season, watching helplessly from the substitutes’ bench as the club ‘imploded’ and sank into the Championship saddled by £177million of debt. Of all his travails over the past four years, it was this experience that hurt Green the most.

The 34-year-old has the chance to help make amends next Saturday, when QPR meet Derby County in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, and seems energised by the chance to make a difference.

I would love to have been there at Wembley yesterday.  My brother and cousins were at the Match - and I could have gone, as a treasured ticket became available because one of my cousin's mates couldn't use his.  I did actually think about it - briefly; Wembley is only up the road a bit from where I live - but had to accept, wisely, that with my current mobility restrictions it really would not have been a good idea. Well - out of the question really!
Memories of the last time QPR were in the play-offs - with Cardiff City at the Millennium Stadium, back in 2003.  I was there that day. Not such a happy result that time, but still an enjoyable event.

No doubt there will be some fine celebrations around the Bush over the next few days.  wine
