A voice new to me - and a beautiful one, exploiting the exotic sounds of the Portuguese language. How good the English translation is, I have no idea, but the sound is one I want to hear more of.

Reminds me of a beautiful song I heard years ago when I was in Morocco.  Such a voice and such a sad air.  I loved it so much I bought the record (yeah, that'll tell you how long ago it was - a 45 vinyl!).  No idea what he was singing about but it almost brought me to tears every time I heard it.
I later was told the story that, far from being an impassioned deliverance from a sad, heartbroken individual, the singer was actually a guy who had been in prison in Morocco (don't know what his crime was) and during his incarceration he wrote this sychophantic song praising the then king of Morocco.  The king was so enamoured to hear all these wonderful things being said about him, that he personally arranged for the guy's release from prison. The song got put on record (yep, that's the one!).  He then became one of the Arab world's most famous and celebrated singers (Abdeladi Belkhayat).

Gisela João.

Nothing about potatoes.  This is the translation from the Youtube video.

(Shipwreck) I put my dream on a ship and the ship on the sea then I opened the sea with my hands so my dream could go down

My hands are still wet with the blue, with the blue of the opened waves and the colour running from my fingers turns the deserted sands blue

The wind comes from far away the night curves with the cold underwater my dream is dying inside a ship

I will cry as much as I need to make, to make the sea rise higher so my ship can reach the bottom and my dream can disappear

I will cry as much as I need to make, to make the sea rise higher so my ship can reach the bottom and my dream can disappear.

Doesn't make much sense to me. But what do I know?

But still, I love the voice.  Here, she sings, with Portuguese text. It's sort of melancholic, but hypnotic, like Fado generally, so you can get the drift.
