The Strait Times (Singapore) printed a special on Fighting Cancer:

"Everything you need to know about cancer and how to fight it."

    http://www.straitstimes.com/tags/fighting-cancer

A lot of very interesting information available about cancer(s) via different links and videos to articles published by the Strait Times.  Only thing is you need to keep using the above link to get back to the main page, or click on "Fighting Cancer Microsite" link.

I do so wish people would stop referring to cancer as a "battle", a fight, something that has to be fought and conquered.  "S/he died after suffering a long battle with cancer" etc.  You don't see that term being used for people with, e.g. diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart problems, those going through kidney dialysis, or indeed any other ailment.  Why single out cancer?  Having twice (so far) come through cancer diagnosis and treatments, I never once considered myself as some sort of soldier having to battle on and fight this evil enemy that's 'attacking' me.  I do not consider myself as 'brave' for having 'conquered' this particular ailment, anymore than I would for getting over a heart attack or stroke, and I certainly don't feel as though I've been through a 'battle'.  I 'dealt with it', and still do - just like I deal with all the other ups and downs of life - with positivity, rather than negativity or aggression.

I am certainly not the only one to feel this way.  Since my first diagnosis (in 2004) I spoke with and got to know well many people with cancer of various forms (some of them terminal), not one of those people regarded themselves as fighting or battling.  See this article published in The Guardian (I so agree with its sentiments).
link   'Having cancer is not a fight or a battle'.

There are many articles and blogs of a similar vein to be found.  Pity the media don't take note, and make some changes to their headlining and reporting of cancer and their depiction of its 'brave victims'.

wary  (I think I should copy this to the Rant & Rave thread, as now that I've got all that off my chest, it certainly feels like a bit of a rant - and one that I didn't even realise I have been harbouring for quite some time now!)

Sorry to have been responsible for your rant, Kitkat.  wary
I've changed the thread title by editing my first post here, from "Fighting Cancer" to "Against Cancer". Is that better? Otherwise you can change it to whatever you think best.

My own understanding is that when a person is sick (whatever ails them, but more especially when it's something serious) they are encouraged to rally their body's energies in order to "fight/combat" the ill, rather than just rely on doctors and medicines, and to concentrate their mind on positivity and imagine they are "fighting" an enemy. That's how I see it and though perhaps physically it's not always easy to measure what good this does, I'm sure it boosts morale. A sort of mental placebo.

Unfortunately for those who hate the use of the word "fighting" in this context, as you say it is nearly always used by the media and isn't likely to change. What titles would you use instead of "Fighting Cancer" and for the "Fight Song"?

Regarding sick people being "brave", I agree with you, since they have no choice in the matter. However, I take it as meaning that they don't just curl up in a corner and weep when the dreaded diagnostic falls but keep smiling through and try to keep their spirits up, so other people say they are "brave". Since they put a "brave" face on even though inside everything is tight and screaming, maybe they are "brave" in a sense after all.

Just my humble thoughts on the matter. Now I'll shut up. shtum

    Celine Dion: "Recovering"

I don't think there's any mention of "fight" or "battle" here, but it's a sad video so sensitive souls should give it a miss.

Breastfeeding son 'detected Staffordshire mum's cancer'

A mother says her baby son "saved her life" by helping her detect breast cancer when he refused to feed.
Sarah Boyle, 26, said at about six months old, Teddy suddenly "became very distressed" when she tried to feed from her right breast.
The Staffordshire mum said his continued behaviour convinced her to insist that a cyst which was found to be benign be re-scanned.
Mrs Boyle is being treated for grade two triple negative breast cancer.
There have been anecdotal reports that babies can pick up breast changes, but this has not been accepted as breast cancer sign by the medical profession.

Mrs Boyle said her son, who is nearly one, had taken "fantastically well" to breastfeeding but his behaviour changed last summer.

She tried feeding Teddy in various positions over several weeks and wondered if there was something wrong with his neck, but now believes milk from her right breast tasted different.
"He became very unhappy and even hit out. For an eight-month baby to push his mother away was really heart-breaking," she said.

Mrs Boyle was diagnosed with a benign cyst in her right breast in 2013 and said when she asked to be re-scanned was told not to worry.
However, as Teddy's behaviour persisted, she also noticed the cyst had become "more rigid" and painful and her breast had changed shape.
She went back to see a doctor and a scan and biopsy later confirmed cancer.
"I remember it was 11:55am on 16th November," she said.

Mrs Boyle is halfway through chemotherapy at Royal Stoke University Hospital, whose staff were "fantastic", she said.
The mother, who is to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction said Teddy, her husband and rest of her family were getting her through the rough times.

Weird, we'll never know if the baby detected an unpleasant taste or texture or whatever else, but there was something. Lucky Mum. I hope we'll have a progress report.
