    The old man who didn't enjoy life in a retirement home and decided he didn't want to celebrate his 100th birthday with them so did a bunk, getting into all sorts of wonderful and excentric scraps and adventures.
    It includes flashback chapters covering his extraordinary and long life during which he crossed paths with the famous all over the world. History revisited.
    This book will make you smile and laugh out loud. There will be a film made and I can't wait.

    Just now reading "Dashing through the snow" by Mary Higgins Clark, who needs no introduction. I like to read stories set at Christmas during this time of the year.

    Best of it is that it's written in large type, so no making the eyes sore trying to read small print with these "new" energy saving bulbs which are supposed to be as bright as our old light bulbs were but definitely are not.

    I've saved up more Christmas stories to read during the festive season. Next one will be "Christmas on Primrose Hill" by Karen Swan, and of course Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and "The Chimes", and the series of short Christmas volumes by Anne Perry.

    "Britt-Marie Was Here". Fredrik Backman's characters, their predicaments, and his analyses made me laugh out loud. Also brought tears. A wonderful book, one of the best I've read in years. I read it following on from Backman's first novel - " A Man Called Ove" - also moving, perceptive and totally involving.

    I've read two books by Fredrik Backman and enjoyed them both immensely.

    The first was "A man called Ove" and I absolutely loved it, so I looked for more and found "My grandmother asked me to tell you she's sorry" which was different but also a great read. There was a Britt-Marie in that one so I suppose your second one, Bimbo, "Britt-Marie was here" is a follow-on. That would be great because I was sad to leave all the characters at the end of the grandmother book.

    I agree with you 100%, Frederik Backman is a wonderful writer and to be highly recommended for a very good read. I love the descriptions you made of the two you've read.

    For any readers who might be interested, Backman's most recent publication is a novella - only 76 pages, and only in a hardback edition at the moment.

    Fredrik Backman sounds a good read, from what you have both said (bimbow and Stardust).
    I'm thinking might be worth searching out some of his works. Pity that they're not yet available in e-read form though. I'm off up to Brent Cross Shopping Centre today for various bits and bobs - will nip into W.H. Smith while there and see if I can fish out some Fredrik Backman.
