Driven to distraction.

Post by Feather on 18th December 2016, 16:32

I'm writing this here because I can't click into the shoutbox. God knows why. I wanted to go there because the other solution I'm looking for would be faster from there. But, o no. That wouldn't work. My problem is with not being able to put up a new avatar. This'll take ages to explain. I found 2 nice pics on photobucket and re-sized them for an avatar. I had 3 attempts to delete the current avatar before it finally disappeared. I assume I had to click on the tick beside where it said delete. Nothing happens sometimes but does at others. My profile page now shows a different avatar from the one on the actual forum pages. Sometimes the url is said to be incomplete and sometimes it is ok but it's one of the old avatars that comes up--which I don't want. GIVE ME STRENGTH!! I'll keep trying. I feel such a fool.

OK so I can post an avatar from my puter so now I'll try to download a pic from Photobucket to my puter and then see if I can post it here from there.

Hi Feather. Oh dear, I feel your frustration. A little tip though - when you change your avatar you dont always see the new one (even though it IS there) until you come out of your Profile and back into the main forum. Also - assuming you have clicked 'SAVE' before doing so. When you're still in your Profile avatar part it just doesn't show the change straight away. I think this is where the problem is - OR could just be that some Photobucket pics are not suitable, i.e. not jpg or png ones. (Don't ask me ... confused. ). If it accepts ones from your computer then it must be working OK. (Also if you put a 0 (zero) in the 'size boxes' it won't restrict the size too much.

(There are a couple of images on the forum at the moment that are not working properly ... this happens from time to time - could be a Photobucket blip or some other temporary glitch). Don't worry - I'm sure it'll sort itself out in due course. xxx

Thanks, kk. I won't give up yet. There are 2 I like cos they have cats and Xmassy stuff together. I'm now trying to download them to my puter but I've forgotten my password for photobucket so am waiting to get it. I didn't even need it last time. My account just came up by magic. xxx.

Feather, that is just the default avatar: It won't delete. If no-one has made an avatar of their own, this is the one that will show.

Actually, there is no need to click into that 'Delete avatar' box anyway - once you put a new avatar in (one that is acceptable) and you press 'Save' it should automatically override the last one you had in there (including the default one) - but the default will remain if you don't put in your own one.

But I keep trying to put my own one in and it says it has been done when it hasn't. I'll have one more try tonight.

So, forget about that 'Delete' box altogether.  Sounds like you might be deleting your new avatar after you've put it in!   Just create the new one - SAVE it - and then come straight back into the main forum; you won't see the new one while you're still inside your profile, even though it's been created.

OK but now it's telling me that the url is incomplete. It must be a fault at Photobucket.

Whoooopeeee!! At last. I don't know what I did. A thingy came up and I clicked on the url and BINGO. It was definitely an extra step that I never used to have to take. Now what about not being able to click on the shoutbox?

Can you get into the Shoutbox now, Feather?
I wonder what the "Refresh" button is on the Shoutbox?
I clicked on it just to see but apart from a jump in the page I couldn't see what had happened?

Yes, Stardust. I can access the Shoutbox now. I was trying to click on the wrong thing.
I haven't a clue what the refresh button does. I think perhaps you are asking the wrong person, don't you?

The part about the "Refresh" button was a general question really, Feather, open for anyone who knows what it is to answer. Nobody has though.

The Chatbox has changed. It's not so easy to see now and it opens in a new page - I liked it better before, but I don't think you've used it yet.

Probably not. Things are complicated enough for me already.

'The 'Refresh' in the Shoutbox just does the same thing as when you refresh a tab or a window in your comp - it just refreshes the Shoutbox - bringing the posts right up to the moment. It's really more for those people who've maybe got it permanently open on another page or in a pop-up page. You probably wouldn't need to refresh it if you're using it while using the forum at same time because your page would already be refreshed and up to date, and also if you have the sound turned on in the Shoutbox (as I have) you would instantly hear the POP noise it makes when somebody posts anyway.
