More than a ton of marijuana was seized after the tunnel discovery

US authorities have uncovered a cross-border drug tunnel running the length of four football fields between a Mexico restaurant and a newly built house in California.

More than a ton of marijuana was seized and four people arrested after the tunnel was exposed on Wednesday between Calexico, California, and Mexicali.

Drug traffickers allegedly purchased the property in Calexico in April last year for $240,000 and finished building a three-bedroom house on the land for $86,000 in December.

Prosecutors said the first tunnel shipment took place on 28 February, when 1,350lbs of marijuana was seized in West Covina, near Los Angeles.

The tunnel extended around 300 yards into Mexico from El Sarape restaurant and ran around 100 yards into US soil.

Laura Duffy, US attorney for the Southern District of California, said: "This house and tunnel were constructed under the watchful eye of law enforcement.

"For the builders, the financiers and the operators of these passageways, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. We will seize your drugs and your tunnel before you even have a chance to use it."

Two men were arrested on Wednesday in Calexico - one at the tunnel house and another at a house believed to have been used to store drugs. They have both been charged with drug trafficking crimes, authorities said.
