New drama series starting tonight on TV.  Looks good:

Tonight (13.03.16) on ITV and ITV Encore, the first episode of new series 'Houdini & Doyle' opens with a shocking mystery for the pair to investigate.

The series stars Stephen Mangan as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Michael Weston as famous escape artist Harry Houdini. The series is inspired by the real-life friendship between the men as well as their interest in spirituality and crime-solving. Doyle famously believed that Houdini possessed supernatural powers which enabled him to perform his incredible illusions. Whilst Houdini himself constantly tried to prove that there was always an explanation behind an illusion; he refused to believe in the paranormal.

Cue a great premise for a new show.

Houdini & Doyle will see the pair team up to help investigate bizarre and seemingly inexplicable crimes. With the help of Constable Adelaide Stratton, the two men will investigate the murder of a nun in the first episode. A witness claims she has seen the whole thing but there’s just one problem: the suspected murderer has been dead for six months.

    Preview:

Hopefully, each episode will be available on catch-up after broadcast, so the full series can be watched here as and when.

Well, so far I have not been able to find a recorded episode to watch here.  I guess we have to wait for a respectable period of time before they become available.  (There are some places providing watchable versions, but they require you to sign up and join first.  Not advisable .... ).  I will continue to keep a look out.

Meanwhile, the following documentary (in 6 parts) tells the story of "The Great Houdini":

Further reading to watch out for - telling the story of the strange friendship between the two men:

    Masters of Mystery:
The Strange Friendship of Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini

    by Christopher Sandford

Renowned mystery author Arthur Conan Doyle and famous illusionist Harry Houdini first met in 1920, during the magician's tour of England. At the time, Conan Doyle had given up his lucrative writing career, killing off Sherlock Holmes in the process, in order to concentrate on his increasingly manic interest in Spiritualism. Houdini, who regularly conducted séances in an attempt to reach his late mother, was also infatuated with the idea of what he called a "living afterlife," though his enthusiasm came to be tempered by his ability to expose fraudulent mediums, many of whom employed crude variations of his own well-known illusions. Using previously unpublished material on the murky relationship between Houdini and Conan Doyle, this sometimes macabre, sometimes comic tale tells the fascinating story of the relationship between two of the most loved figures of the 20th century and their pursuit of magic and lost loved ones.
