    The Wall Empty The Wall

I was sitting with a friend in a well-known coffee shop in Venice, the city of wonderful sights and canals.  As we enjoyed our coffee, a man entered and sat at an empty table beside us.

He called the waiter and placed his order saying, "Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall."

We observe that he was served with just one cup of coffee, but paid for two.  As soon as he left, the waiter pasted a piece of paper on the wall saying, "A cup of coffee."

While we were still there, two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two for the table and one for the wall.  They drank two cups of coffee, but paid for three and left.

The waiter did the same thing again.  He pasted another piece of paper on the wall saying, "A cup of coffee."

My friend and I felt somewhat perplexed.  We finished our coffee, paid the bill and left.

After a few days, we went to the same coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee, a poorly dressed man entered.  As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, "One cup of coffee from the wall, please."

The waiter served coffee to the man with his customary respect.  The customer had his coffee and then left without paying.  We were amazed to watch all of this, as the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the bin.

Then we realised what had happened.  The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants of this town made our eyes well up with tears.

Ponder upon the need of what this man wanted.  He entered the coffee shop without having to lower his self-esteem and thanks to the generosity of others had no need to ask for a free cup of coffee.

The man simply looked at the wall, placed an order for himself, thoroughly enjoyed his coffee and left.  Thinking about it afterwards, I came to the conclusion that it was the most beautiful wall I have ever seen anywhere in the world ...

This is perfectly true, started in Naples. I've heard of it before though never actually come across it in one of the cafés I frequent. I've Googled but despite several articles in the press there doesn't appear to be a list of places that have adopted this concept, which is annoying because there might be one near me. (Google 'Coffee Sharing').
Here they're called 'suspended coffees' and some bakeries also propose 'waiting baguettes or sandwiches' and it would be great if the idea caught on because it really is a great way to help the homeless without giving money which might be used to buy alcohol.
