A sad farewell to Auntie Beeb Empty A sad farewell to Auntie Beeb

Looks terribly dated (really makes me feel old looking at this)  but the first documentary in this collection was made just a year before I started working there (my first job), in the Drama Scripts Department,  typing the scripts for programmes like Doctor Who, Z Cars, The Onedin Line and (my favourite) Play For Today, to name but a few.    Loads of wonderful, very special memories and stories to tell of my two exciting years spent in that unique, historic, iconic edifice - BBC Television Centre in Shepherds Bush (lovingly referred to as The Doughnut - for obvious reasons).  Two of the people that I worked with there remain lifelong friends to this day.

Anyone who ever worked at the Beeb, or had anything to do with it can understand the emotion and deep sadness that overwhelms watching the News yesterday, the day the demolition crew began smashing up this essential and important part of all our lives; they reckon that by 2017 the plan to convert our Beeb into flats and offices will be complete.  Quite devastating to watch a major part of your life disappear into obscurity.

Phillip Schofield slams 'criminal' selling of iconic BBC TV Centre
(and he's not the only one - not by a long chalk)

TV presenter Phillip Schofield has slammed the BBC for selling the historic Television Centre studios in west London.

The iconic home of shows like Dad's Army, Blue Peter and Strictly Come Dancing was bought by a property developer for £200m.

The site on Wood Lane at White City is being turned into one of London's largest new housing schemes.

Demolition work is underway to replace five of the eight studios with 950 homes, offices, restaurants and a hotel.
