THE WEEKLY QUIZ Empty THE WEEKLY QUIZ

Post by Kitkat Mon 16 Jun 2014, 13:59

This is a quiz for people who think they know everything!

Every Monday there will be a new question.  The answer to that question will be posted up the following Sunday, so there will be a full week to give what you think the answer might be, and to discuss the question in general.

    These are not trick questions.
They are straight questions with straight answers..

    1.    Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

I don't know all that much about sports, but I'm thinking boxing or wrestling could be the right answer.

    Answer to No. 3 is

    William Shakespeare (in 1964)

So, you were mostly correct, Bimbow (according to the official answer that I have).

    However ..........

    Umberto's answer is correct also.

Because ... according to this:  http://www.hgitner.com/hitler-heads.html

As leader of Germany and the Nazi party, Adolf Hitler demanded that his image be placed on postage stamps. By printing these stamps and thus forcing German people to use them in their everyday lives, Hitler successfully promoted himself, the war, and the Nazi party during the hardships of WWII. But he accomplished something else too -- his image generated a commission for each stamp that was sold, not unlike today's licensing agreements of famous figures.

So, there ya go ... something new to learn every day.

Well, because it's a *weekly* quiz.  yahboocat

Also, during that week is the chance to discuss and maybe do some research on the question - and possibly even learn something through such research and discussions.
(It's actually a bit frustrating for me, because of course I've got the answers here in front of me, so I can't really join in any ensuing discussion (at least only to a limited extent) -so would be nice actually if someone else did some of the questions some of the time - maybe have a Friday Quiz (?) also where someone else puts forward the question on that day.  Any volunteers?
Or - any suggestions for something else interesting to do along those lines? Anyone?

I welcome the "don't knows" as a bit of a challenge, an opportunity to gain more knowledge, by going and doing some research; turn the dunnos into new discoveries.

I used to be in a regular weekly Pub Quiz team, a good few years back, about a dozen to 14 regular teams playing against each other, and I learned so much in that time.
Not just from the 'don't knows' though ....  partly because I would swat up on my Pub Quiz Book the evening before the quiz night (got the book especially for that purpose giggle ).  My ex was in the team also, and we used to test each other on the book's questions.  Some of the questions are a bit out of date now though; I've just checked - it was published in 2000, so that'll tell you how long ago it was.  surprised

There are 10 different sections in these quiz questions:

    • General Knowledge
    • Entertainment
    • Sport
    • Pop Music
    • Art and Literature
    • Geography
    • Words
    • Science
    • People
    • History

so, depending on which page we hit on, it might make it a bit more interesting.

Of course, it would make it even more interesting - if more people were to join in.  Come on guys .............. Come out to play .......................... Basketball
