I just LOVE this story!  Very Happy

'Jilted man's honeymoon eBay auction makes thousands for charity'

    Jilted man's honeymoon makes £8,000 _80282946_80282945

A man "dumped" six weeks before his wedding has raised thousands of pounds for charity by auctioning his fiancee's place on the honeymoon.

John Whitbread, 32, paid just under £2,000 for the two-week trip to the Dominican Republic for two people, but has sold it on eBay for £8,000.

Mr Whitbread, from Donisthorpe, Leicestershire, said he was "overwhelmed".

He said he did not know why a woman had paid so much to go on holiday with him.

Mr Whitbread, who had expected the holiday to sell for about £500, said he would use £1,000 as joint spending money and £50 to switch names on travel documents.

He said he would donate the rest to testicular cancer charity Balls to Cancer.

Mr Whitbread will not meet the winner until she arrives at the airport on 16 February, "to make it a bit more fun".

He has decided not to publicly reveal her identity until then, but hopes they get on.

Bidding was only open to women because Mr Whitbread said it "didn't really seem like a lads' holiday" and that he would be able to appreciate it more with a woman.

Text from John Whitbread's eBay listing John Whitbread said he had "sharp moves" on the dance floor in his eBay listing

"I thought it might give someone the opportunity to have a cheap holiday; someone who deserves it," he said.

"I think it helps because I'm doing it for charity.

"One of my friends said it's an adventure for someone so it's worth more than going on holiday on your own."

The auction attracted 105 bids on eBay.

Jilted man's honeymoon makes £8,000 Empty 'Decent Proposal'

Post by Kitkat Fri 16 Jan 2015, 14:02

Another [kind of] similar[ish] story in the news today:

    'Decent Proposal'

A plea by a Canadian looking for a travel partner with the same name as his ex-girlfriend became a global story. Now he and the stranger he found have returned. How did they get on?

In November, a Toronto-based man took to Reddit to ask "Are you named Elizabeth Gallagher?"

Jordan Axani had purchased a non-refundable round-the-world trip with ex-girlfriend of the same name, and was looking for a travel companion.

This week, he and student Elizabeth "Quinn" Gallagher of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, returned home from the three-week tour as "brother and sister," rather than the strangers they had been.

But they've rejected any notion that romance was involved. Ms Gallagher has a serious boyfriend and the large hotel chain that housed the pair during their trip gave them two suites at each stop.

The two travelled from New York to Milan, Venice, Vienna, Prague, Khao Lak, Thailand, and Hong Kong, both touring together and spending time apart.

"We probably got along better because we were strangers," Ms Gallagher told Canadian media. "We didn't have a relationship to break."

I'm kind of hoping our first story above has a rather more romantic and fruitful outcome.   I love you   drunken
Well .....  stranger things have happened.  geek     I'll definitely be following their story.  In fact - if I had heard about it sooner (and didn't have my current restrictions for mobility), I would not have thought twice about answering the ad myself. Wink   yes nod

Great story.  Be interesting to see how they get on.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-30716432

The catch is the offer is only open to women, despite Mr Whitbread insisting he is "not ready" for romance and just wants a "bit of a laugh".

"Nothing sinister but it would just be nice to enjoy female company and relax for a couple of weeks. It would be nice to get a friendship out of it.

"It could be anyone but that's the adventure - it's someone I would never go on holiday with."

He said he hopes the honeymoon suite in the four-star hotel on the Caribbean island has a sofa he can sleep on.

It doesnt say when the honeymoon holiday is, but must be next month.  He was due to be married on Valentines Day.  Good luck to him.  toast
