A settlement

Post by Stardust on 16th May 2011, 08:33

Don't know about you others but I find dots and dashes difficult to count. They're just a guide in addition to the number of letters.

A settlement = Rancherie (residential area of an Indian Reserve)

Me too. Looks as though could be an Italian word, probably associated with the opera or something like that?

There is a word I found which ends with o and means a short piece of music between two longer ones but it doesn't begin with R. It does have 10 letters--intermezzo. shrug

You're on the right track, you two, and it's in Webster's dictionary.

I just checked the online versions of the Oxford English and Chambers - it's in both.
It's a well-known word, not obscure like some of the previous ones here.

Found it! But ... wasn't an easy passage at all. First checked in my trusty old Crosswords List. Only two words listed beginning R, ending O. - ritardando and ritornello.
Looked up both in dictionary (Chambers) - first one out. Second one (ritornello) did not really give me the explanation I'm looking for:
ritornello: a short instrumental passage in a vocal work, e.g. a prelude or refrain; a passage for the whole orchestra in a concerto

Soooo .... I had to look it up on line - and guess who was able to give me the info ...
The American Heritage Dictionary!

RITORNELLO:

  • An instrumental interlude recurring after each stanza in a vocal work.
  • A passage or section for full orchestra in a concerto or aria.
  • An instrumental interlude in early 17th-century opera.
  • The refrain of a rondo.

(Just for that, Stardust ... I am going to make you WORK for the next one ... sweat, blood 'n tears!) study

The word we're looking for is singular then, KitKat (as in stalk)?
Just checking because I found one that might fit, except it's a plural.

Sorry, KitKat, but after trawling through the 10-letter words by mistake I really didn't feel up to starting all over again with the 8-letter ones.
Have you remembered what the word was?

Aw Feather, don't be giving up so easily.

OK, for this one ... I'll give you some letters in between ...

btw: The 'Similar Topics' is changing all the time ... and starting to generate some interesting similar topics. From this thread, we now have "The Joy of Lex"

Had a peep in ...

The Joy of Lex: (from a forum called 'Liberating Minds')
I saw this neat show on Discovery Times channel called The Joy of Lex.
It has nothing to do with the Superman comics, no. Lex is a shorthand
way to say lexicon. It's an interesting, fun, and sometimes weird look
at the way we use words.

and so ... that has led to exploring more into this very interesting looking forum 'Liberating Minds'. Covering such categories as:
Philosophy
Psychology
Economics
Political & Social Philosophy
Current Political Events
Ethics & Morality
Natural Sciences
Social Sciences
History
Technology
Religion & Mythology
Culture, Literature & Art
etc etc
I'm enjoying reading in there.

Yes, Feather, I thought it would be harder than finding elephant.

As we did at first, just go ahead and put the next word when you know the one you've found fits the previous clues. This saves time and favours choosing words that, although not too easy to guess or find, aren't so obscure that we have to seek confirmation before going ahead with the next one.
If everyone agrees?
We still have the option of proposing a word first if we're not completely sure it fits the bill.
