Qatar to spend staggering £134 billion on World Cup Empty Qatar to spend staggering £134 billion on World Cup

The final cost for the London Olympics came in at just under £9 billion and when we published that story back in October it certainly angered plenty of you.

However, that expense is nothing but a drop in the ocean when compared to just how much oil-rich Qatar is planning to spend on the World Cup in 2022.

According to Deloitte, the country is preparing to spend a quite staggering $200 billion (£134.3bn) – or roughly 15 times more than it cost London to host the Olympics.

The Deloitte report claims that $140 billion of that will be for transportation infrastructure including a new airport, roads and a metro system.

A further $20 billion will be spent on "tourism infrastructure"

The population of Qatar is under two million but they expect 400,000 people to visit the country during the World Cup.

The only thing that would seem to make any kind of 'sense' and 'justification' here would be the the promise of much of that money being spent on tourism for the country and "transportation infrastructure including a new airport, roads and a metro system" - although even the estimated amount there ($140 billion!) sounds to be an extortionate amount of money - in theory that part of it might make some sense IF indeed that is what transpires, with the prospect of tourism bringing fresh finance into the country.  Historically though, that is a huge IF.  The same promises are given for Brazil, who will be hosting the World Cup in 2014.  Demonstrations have already been taking place in Brazil over the failure to keep many of these promises in practice, and what about the not so readily spread news about the thousands of people who have lost and will be losing their homes and businesses in the midst of all this land acquiring, for the building of new stadiums, hotels etc?

Qatar's construction frenzy ahead of the 2022 World Cup is on course to cost the lives of at least 4,000 migrant workers before a ball is kicked, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has claimed.

Qatar to spend staggering £134 billion on World Cup Empty Qatar World Cup: £3m corruption claim

Post by Kitkat Sun 01 Jun 2014, 09:46

Fifa is facing fresh allegations of corruption over its controversial decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

The Sunday Times has obtained millions of secret documents - emails, letters and bank transfers - which it alleges are proof that the disgraced Qatari football official Mohamed Bin Hammam made payments totalling US$5m (£3m) to football officials in return for their support for the Qatar bid.

The question has been raised as to whether there should be a re-run of the bidding for 2022, but what on earth good is that going to do?   Far too late for any kind of effective 'quick-fix' now.

Better to nip it in the bud though. There's still time to draw in the reins before the whole thing becomes a complete farce.
