Feather by the sea.

Post by Feather on Sat 23 Apr 2011, 21:32

It's so peaceful here tonight. I can see the lights of The Flotta Oil Terminal across Scapa Flow, on the horizon. All the birds have gone to roost and the silence is magical. The only sound is the tap tapping of my keyboard as I type. A black and a ginger cat have both made use of my window cill in the peaceful twilight. I wouldn't wish to be anywhere else in the world right now.  :queen:

What an evocative description for your first blog post, Feather.

At last I've got the car of my dreams--a Fiat 500. It's retro styled, creamy white, red/white upholstery, red carpets, cream dashboard, cream leather steering wheel. I've put my personal number plates on it---M15 YRA--- with "FIAT" attatched. The finishing touches are 3 understated red decals, 1 on the bonnet and 1 each side just behind the back windows. Their design is Tribal.Chica's cushion, collar and lead are also red and, of course, she's pure white. My friend, Jean asked me if I realised that I'd be able to wear only red or white when I drive it! I love it, love it, love it. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Will take a little while before Feather gets stuck in to organizing her poems, as I know she had some rather sudden and distressing news today, and so she has other more pressing things to deal with at the moment.

Thinking about you, Feather. happyheart I hope you get some promising news after tomorrow. xx

I'm sorry that I have not been here recently. It all seemed to be too much keeping posting in more than one forum.
The issue mentioned in kk's post had a good conclusion but we, as a family, had a worrying time. My brother has fully recovered now from his operation and all is well.
I'm thinking today of all the folk in the south of England and Wales. A hurricane is forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Don't venture out unless it is absolutely necessary, kk.
We have a calm day here in Orkney.
I'm looking forward to going to Glasgow on 10th Dec to see Andre Rieu in concert. My son, Ray, is coming with me which makes it all the better. No doubt I'll hit the shops at some point but the big deal is the concert.Bye for now.

The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby

Post by Kitkat on Sun 24 Aug 2014, 15:52

A lovely film on TV today reminded me of you, Feather, for a number of reasons.  I love you  You might have already seen it and if so, you will understand - but if you haven't yet seen it I would recommend you do watch the film "The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby".  I am sure you will love it.  happyheart  It's actually a 2005 remake of the original "Greyfriars Bobby" which was first made in 1961.
The film even has its own Wikipedia page here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Greyfriars_Bobby

Unusual for Feather to go off on one of her trips without letting people know she's going to be away. Also, she's not that long just back from a break in Aberdeen.
I have texted her, asking her to just text back a quick "OK" reply, just so that we know all is well.
My text is still pending in my phone (i.e. not got through to her phone yet). That was about an hour ago - but she could well be somewhere where it's difficult to get a reception.

Soon as I hear back, I will let you know - or maybe if she reads this she will come and let us know herself.

Just heard back from her now.  Poor love's been in misery with a very painful abscess after a tooth extraction.
She's past the worst of it now and getting better slowly.
I suggested to her a hot toddy with some clove oil might ease her discomfort a bit - at the very least will put a smile on her face anyway.

Hope to see you back with us real soon, Feather.  catlick  xxx

Ouch, I really feel for poor Feather, and hope the nasty painful mouth abscess will now leave her in peace. I did wonder because I'd not seen her about on any of the other forums either for over a week.

Hope you're better soon Feather, we miss you. happyheart

Re: Feather by the sea.

My sincere apologies for causing you to worry about me. Apart from anything else, I've sort of gone off forums recently. On the spiritual side, I've formed the opinion that I won't learn any more re proof of an afterlife. I've resigned myself to that uinfortunate fact.
As well as that, I've been very emotional lately--especially in the mornings--and tears come for the least of reasons. I still miss those who have passed away and sometimes the longing for them is just too much for me.
I spend a lot of most days alone in the house with sad thoughts. I think I'm just lonely and overly sentimental. I've been resisting the urge to reveal all this to you because it's so depressing. I suppose I need a good kick up the backside but I suspect that would not make any difference.
The only thing that would help me enormously is what I can't find---the conviction that I will meet my dear ones again. My brain keeps telling me that I won't and that's too much for my emotions to cope with. There you have it, my friends.xxx.

Re: Feather by the sea.

Post by Kitkat on Fri 02 Jan 2015, 12:50

Dear, sweet, glamorous, thoughtful, lovely friend, Feather,   happyheart

I'd wager you feel a whole lot better now for having written it all down ....
This time of year tends to bring all kinds of deep-rooted thoughts and feelings to the fore.
All the more reason to know and remember that there are folk at the other end of your writings - right there in your computer - real people who care and understand.  You are never far away from a listening ear when the sadness overwhelms you, or a laugh and a joke (or a good therapeutic cry) with friends.  Your computer can transport you all over the world - and can bring those friends nearer to you, right into your own home - at the touch of a button or two, whenever you wish.

I saw where you wrote in the Shoutbox that you are starting on a new "project" - that of sorting out your garden.   :thumb:   I'm thinking it would be really nice (if you have the inclination, that is) to detail here your progress in that department.  A weekly progress report perhaps(?) Maybe some 'before and after' photos(?)
I, for one, would look forward to reading all about that.  Also, I know from first-hand experience how therapeutic and beneficial gardening and enjoyment of the garden can be in so many ways.

Wishing you very happy thoughts and happy times for 2015. toast  xXx

Re: Feather by the sea.

Post by Feather on Sat 03 Jan 2015, 11:47

Good morning, Kitkat. Thank you for your kind words--most of them undeserved by me.

My progressing garden is a bright light in an otherwise gloomy future. I love flowers with a passion. This time of year there is not yet much to see but I have high hopes for the Spring bulbs of daffs, narcissi, tulips, bluebells and irises.

I have had shrubs in pots for years but now most of them have been planted in the newly dug out borders. It's the dormant season for most of them but the evergreen ones are pretty even now.

I also have plants in small pots in the garage by a window. They will be planted out in Spring.
I'm hoping to have small garden trees eg Forest Pansy, Cherry Blossom, and three others at the back, nearest to the fence and in the two furthest away corners. In front of them will be tallish flowering shrubs. At the front of the borders I plan to plant perennials and ground cover flowers such as Pansies, London Pride, Tom Thumbs etc. I have in mind some of the flowers that grew in my mother's garden when I was a child---lupins, marigolds, columbines, roses, lily of the valley etc.

I want to plant hedging in various places--flowering hedging-- to enclose and divide areas from one another. Low, ornate edging will separate the borders from the grass areas.
The borders are not straight. They form semicircles in two corners and run straight but narrower round the rest of the area.

Finally I must explain that my Spring bulbs will flower in an area of grass which I can see from the kitchen window. This is separate from the rest. We have a lot of ground and three areas of it are still to be decided upon. What used to be the cat enclosure will be mostly grass with some hedging now that the fencing has gone. The two other areas are in the lap of the gods meantime.

Sorry about the length of this post but when I got started, I couldn't stop till all the details were included. I will try to put pictures on here when there is something to see. x.

The latest---

I over balanced in the living room on Monday night, fell from full height to the floor with a thud. I spent all day yesterday in A&E . My right ankle is broken. I have to use a zimmer!! My pride is hurting more than my ankle. Zimmers are for the aged and infirm, not for me!!
I have to return to A&E next week to have the hard cast put on. It looks as if I will be like this for some time. Chica is afraid of the zimmer and will not have walkies for a while unless someone else takes her. Still, it could be worse: I can still get full use of my computer. :thumb:

Oh dear, Feather. surprised    "Over balanced" ? ...  Not heard it put that way before. giggle  They call it "one too many" where I come from. pirat  wary

Seriously, though, that can't have been very nice for you... rock

I've just come back from hospital myself.  Stress Echocardiogram test.  Can't use the treadmill (because of my mobility situation), so I had to have some kind of stuff pumped into my veins instead so they could take the photographs. Haven't got the results yet, but I'm pretty sure everything's OK in that department.
5 hours hanging around there today.  Wasn't so bad though cos I've got a new gadget now.  (Probably what you might call a "younger person's zimmer" ... )  geek - or even a practical but fun getarounder...  I guess you could do with something like this at the moment, Feather.  Chica would fit just nicely in the basket!
My Christmas pressie to myself this year (it's called a Rollator):

Makes life a whole lot easier. It's actually perfect for my current needs - the seat is exactly the right height, and no problem now with the inevitable queues and waiting times.  It's got a removable basket and a place to carry my fold-up walking stick and folding Mister Grabbit. And it folds up itself so can fit nicely into the car.  What more can I possibly need? geek

The only "problem" that arose today was when I went to get up off the bed (a painful activity at the best of times) and the doc handed me over my folded-up walking stick which I needed for the process.

One touch and it instantly springs out into one piece ...  (James Bond style) ...  Doc was standing just a little bit too close and unfortunately I hadn't warned him what to expect ... very nearly maimed him for life!  Just missed stabbing him right in the short 'n' curlies.  obgob

Poor you Feather.  rock catlick   I suppose that means no gardening for a while either?  I know!  Maybe you could get KitKat to lend you her new fancy rollater and go whizzing round the flowerbeds with Chica's lead attached for his daily walkies in the garden.  pirat

Despite your trials and tribulations, with such a bad start to 2015 for both KK and Feather, I hope the rest of the year will be full of brightness and love for everyone.

Feather, I'm on a parallel road to yours; the more I read and hear, the more doubts I have which make the balance swing towards there being nothing after death. There's never enough proof, and always too many who don't believe and want to persuade us that only they know the truth (i.e. that oblivion awaits us).

When we begin to loose depth we need to concentrate our thoughts on love and light and remember happy days, even if this means forcing our minds to obey. Many of us have had "signs" but as time passes we forget - perhaps we should keep a special notebook in which we write all these down so that when we begin to despair we can read what we've written and remember the magic moments when we've experienced a sign or presence from those gone before us.

There are things in my own experience that are unexplained and which tend to there being a continuation after this life and that a loved one can stay with us as a sort of guardian angel (not the person I'd have expected, but then we don't usually get the "signs" we expect either). Because I feel the presence of this person in times of need, it reassures me again when I am sad and lost (we all feel this way sometimes, when darkness seems to loom and hide the light, when the heart is heavy with the burden of loss and we long for a hug and loving words from a special being).

Nobody knows for sure what lies after this life so we cannot rule out a beautiful Paradise beyond all we can imagine. We should be optimistic and positive in our choice of what to believe.

I hope you feel much better soon, and that all your worries will be swept away.

Hello,Stardust. I'm so very glad to hear from you. We are kindred spirits I think. We seem to come to the same conclusions and think in the same way. What you write always comforts me.
That is because I know you have thought deeply about it before posting. I thank you for your optimism. It does rub off on me. We have never met but you are important to me. We are far apart physically but in no other way. Thank you for being you.xxx.

PS---A flash of lightning just knocked out my computer and I thought I'd lost this post to you but it was still here when I restarted it.

The feeling's mutual, Feather. I think the connection may go way back, before our time; I get the feeling it's very old.

Lucky the lightning didn't damage your computer. In fact, lucky you didn't get an electric shock. surprised

Spring will soon be here, the days are getting longer and the sun's still up there in the sky.

More soon, I hope. I'm glad you're posting again and I hope your spirit will soon be singing with the birds, soaring over the trees and rooftops, bouncing on the clouds...

Give Chica a cuddle for me.

happyheart

Hi, everyone. I go to the hospital on Wednesdeay of this week. Hopefully, the cast will be removed from my leg. It will be such a relief as it reaches all the way up to my knee. It's so hot in bed at night that it's disrupting my sleep. I'll have to do as I'm told re the next stage. I imagine I won't be allowed to walk very far for a while. I have to have physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles which haven't been used lately. Seemingly they weaken even in a few days of non use.

I'm looking forward to finding out this week who murdered Lucy Beale in "East Enders". Sad, I know, but I love my Soaps because they make me forget my own concerns for a wee while. They are a great escape.

It's a lovely day here in Orkney---calm and sunny---but there's no sign of my Spring bulbs yet. It's usually March when they sprout from the soil. The garden is dormant yet. Most of my plants are in the ground now but won't flower till later in the year. That's ok. I can wait.

BTW--I tried and failed to post a photo of Kirkwall Bay here this morning. I don't know what I did wrong.xxxx.

All of those photos are so beautiful.  Tranquil ... and spiritual.  I'm sure that's not the case all year round of course, but I so agree with Jamboree - you are very lucky to live in such surroundings.
I can really appreciate that, because I have had the similar privilege - growing up in a most exquisitely beautiful part of the world, my spiritual home - County Wicklow in Ireland.   It's far too long since I've been able to go back and 're-charge the batteries' sigh  .... but I hope to be able to do so some day soon.

But it wasn't Jane. She was only covering for Bobby--the real murderer.

I think that was a copout. He was never in the list of suspects so the whole thing was a cheat imo.
Not only that but it is also totally unbelievable/unrealistic.

I am disappointed and angry. GRRRR.

There was a further episode at 9.25pm the same night which showed what happened the night Lucy died. Seemingly Bobby did it because "Lucy made everyone unhappy".

The cast is off my leg but I'm still on painkillers. It's at its worst first thing in the morning. It burns, is itchy and swollen. I don't know when I'm going to be able to walk the dog again. My next check up is on Wednesday of next week. That'll be two months since I fell.

Everything seems to be at its worst first thing in the morning.  Be nice if we could just cut out mornings altogether. giggle   Ah, at least you can compensate by enjoying the beautiful sunrises you must get around your part of the world. happyheart   And when you are better and fit to get your legs walking again, both you and Chica will appreciate your walkies all the more.

I have actually seen people in one of the parks near me taking their dogs for a walk in their wheelchairs!  Yep, they seem to go in a group.  Some have those electric scooters, some self-propelled and some have people pushing the wheelchair.  There are also special organised dog-walking groups, or just people group walking groups in some of the open spaces around here.  Ha-ha - I saw where one was advertised on Streetlife, they were looking for people to join a group to "walk for health".  Someone expressed an interest and asked if it would be okay to bring their dog with them - and they were told NO!  The "organiser" told her to go join one of the dog-walking groups - in other words "stick to yer own".  Then a load of doggy-lovers joined in responding to it, and it got really quite nasty, ending up in a "them and us" type of thing.

Early mornings here are about the only time it's quiet. I love sitting with a cup of coffee playing solitary scrabble or reading while almost everyone else is still asleep. Or standing at the window watching the sky change colour before sunrise. Zen time!

I hope the hospital can give you medication to ease the burning/itching and relieve the swelling of your leg, Feather, it must make you miserable. Let's hope you'll soon be better and enjoying sunny walks with Chica. happyheart

Added Thursday 5th March:
Just saw in the ShoutBox that your friend Marion passed away, Feather. My heartfelt condolences to you.

Thank you,Stardust. I have been so sad since she passed away. I don't quite believe yet that I can't pick up the phone and talk to her. I've written a short poem in her memory. The form of it happens automatically, whether short, long, rhymed or unrhymed. I have little control of that. I trust that it will always be appropriate to the subject matter.

The Change.

A light has gone out,
Melting from dim to dark.
Morning will see no change.
Betrayed by time, we live
In misty memory.
She was that light.
It radiated fromher eyes
In love and friendship.
She was essential to happy times
Of smiles and laughter.
Now it is we who need her courage,
Her acceptance of what
Each day may bring.
Stay near us, gentle spirit,
And guide us home.

For Marion, who changed my world in her passing. 1st March, 2015.

Really, there is nothing to say that you cannot "still pick up the phone and talk to Marion" - and you might even be happily surprised to find that she 'hears' you - and you may even notice that she 'answers' in a variety of ways.  happyheart  Just keep a lookout for the 'signs'.  Wink

So glad your ankle is on the mend now - not half as glad as Chica, I would imagine. Very Happy

So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend Feather. The words of your poem are very moving -- and powerful.

Yesterday I got £170 from Jackson's Jewellery reps who were in Orkney for the day. It was for 2 gold rings which had come down to me from 2 men of generations back. I don't even know who they were. Also I got rid of 2 gold bracelets which belonged to my Great Aunt, Lizzie, my father's father's sister. I remember her well. She lived till she was 90. She was tiny and all fur and pearls but told some of the bluest jokes I had ever heard. Very Happy
