    A Florida couple have made a surprising discovery after finding a puppy trapped under the bonnet of their car.

    Rescuers removed one of the vehicle's wheels before they were able to pry the stray dog from between the steering mechanism and an axle.

    Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said the puppy must have travelled "anything from four, five or 10 miles".

    He added: "They realised the engine wasn't purring. In fact, it was actually running a little 'ruff'."

    The dog was hot and exhausted, but otherwise survived the ordeal unscathed.

    It is unknown how the animal got into the engine bay.
