Mother of two, 29, told she has lung cancer... then dies the next day

In The Telegraph today:

A mother of two young children has died of lung cancer only 24 hours after being diagnosed and despite never having smoked.

You just never know what's waiting for you around the corner. pale

Doctors told Kirsty Allen, who was only 29, that they had “never seen anything so aggressive”, her family said.

Her death came so swiftly that she did not even have time to say goodbye to her children, Ebony, six, and two-year-old Adam.

Miss Allen, from Annfield Plain, Co Durham, went to a doctor last month to complain about a problem with her eyes and headaches.

A routine blood test disclosed abnormalities in the enzymes in her liver and bones. She was referred to University Hospital of north Durham.

Miss Allen, a part-time office administrator for a flooring company, had further tests and was sent to a lung specialist.

However, her breathing became poor and she was taken to hospital.
Miss Allen was allowed home over Easter but returned to hospital after she continued to struggle to breathe.

On Wednesday, April 3, she was told that she had advanced lung cancer that had spread to her spleen, liver and glands in her neck.

“The doctors said they had never seen anything so aggressive,” said her mother Wendy Allen, 49. “It happened so suddenly. She was diagnosed on the Wednesday and on the Thursday she died.

“She never smoked in her life. She was so healthy and went to the gym and liked keeping fit. Kirsty lived for her children. She wanted to get through the chemo so she could last another 10 years. Adam is only two and she thought if only she could get him up to 12. But she died the next day.

“I’m making a memory box for the kids. She said she didn’t want them to forget her. It’s so difficult.”
Her daughter Ebony said she would miss her mother’s cuddles when she tucked her into bed.

“I have drawn her an Easter card and my little brother did too and they will be sent to heaven with her,” she said.
“I also have a love heart and I wrote inside: 'I love you mammy, you are beautiful, love from Ebony.’ I wrote it all by myself. I will really miss her.”

Mrs Allen said her daughter had been looking forward to being a godparent to her nephew at St Joseph’s Church in Stanley, Co Durham. The christening has been cancelled. Instead, her funeral will be held there on Monday.

Dr Keith Prowse, the honorary medical adviser for the British Lung Foundation, said: “It is unusual to die of lung cancer at 29 and it may be that it was an aggressive form that did not show any symptoms until very late. That’s common.”
