Welcome to our coronavirus live page.
Here are the main stories this morning:

    • Prime Minister Boris Johnson has invited the leaders of the devolved nations to a summit on how "Team UK" can recover from the pandemic. It follows the SNP's fourth Scottish Parliament election win in a row and Labour's win in the Welsh Parliament
    • French President Emmanuel Macron has called on the US to drop its restrictions on the export of Covid-19 vaccines and ingredients. His words came as a divide emerged between parts of Europe and the US over how best to increase global vaccine production.
    • Doctors in India are reporting cases of a rare infection in recovering and recovered Covid-19 patients. The country is battling a deadly second wave of the pandemic
    • Prices for international travel are set to rise this year due to pent-up demand caused by the pandemic and fewer aeroplanes in service, a travel boss has warned. Booking.com's chief executive Glenn Fogel told the BBC that holiday "prices are already going up"
    • On Saturday, the UK recorded a further 5 deaths and 2,047 new cases, according to government data

The 'black fungus' maiming Covid patients in India

Doctors in hard-hit India are reporting cases of a rare infection among recovering and recovered Covid-19 patients.
Mucormycosis is a rare but dangerous fungal infection which affects the nose, eyes and sometimes the brain.
Mucor mould is found in soil, plants, manure and decaying fruits.
Doctors believe the infection, also known as “black fungus”, may be being triggered by the use of steroids, a life-saving treatment for severe and critically ill Covid-19 patients.

Macron calls on US to drop vaccine export bans

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on the US to drop its restrictions on the export of Covid-19 vaccines and ingredients.
His words came as a divide emerged between parts of Europe and the US over how best to increase global vaccine production.
Currently, around 1.25 billion doses have been administered around the world.
However, less than 1% have been given to the world's 29 poorest countries, according to news agency AFP.

Which countries are on England's green list for international travel?

One of the big announcements this week is that from 17 May, people in England will be allowed to take holidays abroad in a small number of countries.
The government has put 12 destinations on the green travel list, meaning anyone returning will not need to quarantine.
    The 12 are:

    • Portugal
    • Israel
    • Singapore
    • Australia
    • New Zealand
    • Brunei
    • Iceland
    • Gibraltar
    • Falkland Islands
    • Faroe Islands
    • South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands
    • St Helena, Tristan de Cunha and Ascension Island

However, the government advises that not all the green list destinations are currently open to UK tourists and it is travellers' responsibility to check.

India records more than 4,000 deaths for a second day

The devastating wave of cases ravaging India shows no sign of abating, with more than 4,000 new deaths recorded for a second day.
On Saturday health officials said the total toll had risen to 242,362. New confirmed cases meanwhile rose by a further 403,378 - close to the all-time record daily rise.
Countries around the globe are sending supplies to try to help India. Overwhelmed hospitals are struggling with a shortage of oxygen and ventilators nationwide.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is under growing pressure to impose a national lockdown as cases start to spread from state to state and from cities to the countryside.

Countries with high vaccinations levels need to 'rethink priorities'

    Coronavirus - 9th May 2021 8fe37b10
Prof Andrew Pollard said about 30,000 people across the world would die from Covid today

The world is facing an “absolute calamity” from coronavirus, a scientist on the Oxford vaccine group which developed the AstraZeneca jab has said.
Prof Andrew Pollard told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that about 30,000 people across the world would die today from Covid, and the numbers were increasing.
He said "history won't look kindly on us" if a million people died this month and countries had not acted.
“Countries that have now vaccinated the vast majority of the vulnerable need to be rethinking priorities.
"We are in a very joined up global community and we just can’t stand by and see that level of catastrophe happen.”
Prof Pollard added that vaccine doses available today "need to be focused, from a global health perspective, on those who are going to die this month".

Data on rare blood clots following second AZ doses 'very reassuring'

Prof Pollard was asked if he supported the decision by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation that people under 40 in the UK should not be given the AstraZeneca vaccine, if there was another one available, over links to very rare blood clots.
Prof Pollard said it speaks to the "extraordinary position" the UK is in where the country is so well protected against Covid that it has the "luxury" to make decisions to minimise any risks from the vaccine programme.
He says in most countries there is little if any choice over vaccines.
Asked about under-40s who have had one AstraZeneca dose already but may not want a second, Prof Pollard says there is "no signal" of very rare clots in people who have already had one dose and did not experience clotting.
He says this is "very reassuring".

Gove signals hugging to be allowed from 17 May

Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove was asked if there will be an end to a ban on hugging and people going into each other's houses coming this week.
Gove says "all being well" the PM will confirm tomorrow that there will be a relaxation of restrictions on 17 May.
Currently, people are advised to avoid close contact with people they don't live with.
But speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, Gove said: "Without prejudice to a broader review of social distancing, it is also the case that friendly contact, intimate contact, between friends and family is something that we want to see restored."

Government to say more 'shortly' on mask wearing in classrooms, Gove says

Michael Gove was also asked if mask wearing for secondary school students in class will end as restrictions are eased.
He tells the Andrew Marr Show the government is "reviewing the evidence".
"What we want to do throughout is to balance public health with making sure that we can return to normal as quickly as possible."
Gove adds that he won't pre-empt the judgement, but the government will say more about it "shortly".
It comes after the Daily Telegraph this week reported the measure would come to an end.

Time is right to ease restrictions, Oxford scientist says

More now from the head of the Oxford University vaccine group, Prof Andrew Pollard, who was speaking to the Andrew Marr Show.
Prof Pollard told the programme he believes it is the right time to ease restrictions in England.
Asked whether it would be safe for family and friends to hug on 17 May, when England is set to move to stage three of the road map out of the coronavirus lockdown, he said the country has seen the "extraordinary success" of both the vaccination programme and the "prolonged" lockdown.
"I think it is time to start, based on the very careful modelling that's been done, relaxing some of those restrictions," he said.
"That means we're in a very fortunate position here in the UK."

    Spain celebrates as restrictions ease

Spain has been under a state of emergency since October to try to contain the spread of the coronavirus. But on Sunday that state of emergency ended - and Spaniards headed out into the streets to celebrate.
For the first time in months there are no curfews or restrictions on travel. "I was fed up with not being able to get out of Madrid," one woman told AFP news agency.
Crowds in Barcelona greeted midnight with applause and music. "It's like New Year's," Oriol Corbella told AFP. "We're getting a bit of normality back, of freedom, but we have to keep in mind that the virus is still around," he said.
Authorities are less excited. The state of emergency allowed regional leaders to impose restrictions, while a health ministry report on Thursday warned lifting measures now could cause a spike in new infections. One in five ICU beds across Spain is still occupied by a Covid patient, it said.

    Japan holds Olympic test event

Some 420 athletes took part in the test event on Sunday

On Friday, Japan extended its state of emergency to handle a fresh rise in coronavirus cases. Bars and restaurants have had to shut or stop serving alcohol, while cinemas and karaoke parlours have been closed.
The new infections have raised further doubts about whether or not the delayed Summer Olympics can take place in the country as scheduled. Opinion polls suggest the public do not want it to go ahead.
But organisers continued to prepare on Sunday, with a test event taking place in Tokyo's Olympic Stadium. Some 420 athletes took part, nine from abroad - including US sprinter Justin Gatlin.
More than 11 test events have taken place since last month without any reported infections.

Inter fans gather again to celebrate Serie A win

    Coronavirus - 9th May 2021 15779a10

Inter Milan played behind closed doors on Saturday due to ongoing Covid restrictions. But fans gathered outside the stadium regardless to once again celebrate the team's Serie A title win.
Raucous celebrations took place in Milan last weekend when Inter were confirmed as champions, as supporters swarmed the city centre. It's the club's first title win in 11 years.
On Saturday, fans gathered outside their stadium ahead of the game against Sampdoria. Inter won the tie 5-1 - the third game this season in which they've scored five or more goals.

    What's happened so far today?

Here's a recap of the main coronavirus stories so far. In the UK, the government is looking ahead to further easing, but in India the situation remains grave.

    • Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to confirm tomorrow that coronavirus restrictions in England will be eased on 17 May, Cabinet Officer Minister Michael Gove has said. Asked whether a ban on hugging people would be lifted, Gove said "friendly contact" was something the government wanted to see. This is what the roadmap for easing lockdown looks like
    • A scientist that helped develop the AstraZeneca vaccine has warned the world faces an “absolute calamity” from coronavirus. Prof Andrew Pollard said vaccine doses available today "need to be focused, from a global health perspective, on those who are going to die this month"
