THE LATE LATE SHOW Empty THE LATE LATE SHOW

Post by Kitkat Sat 31 Jan 2015, 22:52

First broadcast on RTE television on 2nd April 1965, The Late Late Show is the world's longest-running chat show - and the first and longest-serving presenter, Gay Byrne was/is a national institution.

In 2010, The Irish Times said Byrne was "unquestionably the most influential radio and television man in the history of the Irish State".    In 2011, he was approached to become President of Ireland but declined to run, despite topping opinion polls.

THE LATE LATE SHOW Empty The Meaning of Life - Gaybo interviews ...

Post by Kitkat Wed 04 Feb 2015, 12:05

Oh yes, Gay's face ... priceless!
That interview is actually from Gaybo's more recent TV series, The Meaning of Life, where he interviews various personalities with the specific purpose of hearing about their own individual thoughts on "the meaning of life".

The Meaning of Life with (Uncle) Gay Byrne has recently made a welcome return to TV screens.

As many of you know, Gay Byrne always asks his guests what they would say to God if they ever met him/her/it at the pearly gates of heaven.

Stephen Fry is a staunch atheist and his answer is very powerful as seen by the startled expression on Gay Byrne's face.

The former Late Late Show host asks Fry to imagine a hypothetical situation where he arrives at the pearly gates and is confronted by the all powerful being, and what he would say. The resulting few minutes make for some pretty fantastic television.

The longest answer to that question that Gaybo has ever gotten ...

Bob Geldoff had a few choice words of his own to put across on the subject also:

update - From The Irish Independent (May 6, 2017)

'GARDAI have launched an investigation after a TV viewer claimed comments made by Stephen Fry on an RTE show were blasphemous.'
Independent.ie can reveal that a member of the public reported the allegation to Ennis garda Station following a broadcast of ‘The Meaning of Life’, hosted by Gay Byrne, in February 2015.

Gardaí in Donnybrook have recently contacted the man who made the report and a senior source revealed a full investigation is now due to be carried out.
Under the Defamation Act 2009 a person who publishes or utters blasphemous material "shall be guilty of an offence". They are be liable upon conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding €25,000.
The specific complaint relates to an interview conducted on 'The Meaning of Life' with Mr Fry. During the show the comedian and writer was questioned about what he might say to God at the pearly gates.

I wonder what Bob Geldof's daughter Peaches answer to that question would be if she had been interviewed on the meaning of life.  In her short life she changed her beliefs as often as she changed her hairstyles.

    Dylan Moran  (1999 or 2000)?

One of the comments to that video says:
That wasn't Dylan's first time on the Late Late. The first was when he did a stand-up routine on a segment featuring young up-and-coming Irish comedians and he died an absolute death. He was funny but he got zero laughs. It was car crash TV. Would love to find a clip of it somewhere

Must try and fish out that clip and get it up here.

THE LATE LATE SHOW Empty Gay Byrne's Final Late Late Show 1999

Post by Kitkat Tue 12 Mar 2019, 23:32

On the 21st of May, 1999 Gay Byrne presented his final 'Late Late Show' after almost 37 years as the show's host. The world's longest running chat show had, over four decades, brought many topics deemed taboo by elements of Irish society into a public forum for discussion. The first episode of 'The Late Late Show' was broadcast on the 6 July 1962 and was intended as a 'filler' for the summer schedule. He was presented with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle by Bono and Larry Mullen, Jr.

Gay Byrne's daughter reveals beloved Irish presenter’s final wish before his passing
As the Late Late Show returns to Irish TV for a new season tonight, we remember Gay Byrne.
When legendary Late Late Show host Gay Byrne passed away in November 2019, Ireland lost one of its most beloved television personalities.
But Suzy Byrne, one of Gay’s two daughters alongside Crona, lost something far more significant: her father and someone who had been a constant presence in her life.

The loss of a parent is one of the hardest things to face in life with occasions like Father’s Day proving particularly poignant.
June 2020 marked Suzy’s first Father’s Day without her dad.

Eager to mark the occasion, she wrote candidly in the Sunday independent about Gay’s last few days following a brave battle with prostate cancer and how his dying wish was to be taken back to Howth to see the Baily lighthouse in his final days.
"Dad's last moments were peaceful, and if death can be gentle, his was," she wrote.
"To the end his timing was impeccable and considerate. Dad went when he decided it was time. Medically, a week earlier, he had been told things were looking up.
"Always gracious, Dad smiled and thanked his doctor, John McCaffrey. Minutes later he said to me: 'Please Suzy, take me to Howth.’”
    THE LATE LATE SHOW 00005210

Suzy recalled Gay’s final few days, with the family doing everything in their power to make the time as “peaceful and gentle” as possible.
She wrote: "On October 29, 2019, we brought Dad home to Howth. Within minutes he changed: gone was the fear and agitation, replaced by peace and contentment.
"His beloved Baily lighthouse in his view, and all of us with him. His last days. We chose to have Dad downstairs, slightly away but still centre to the hum and noise of us all.

"Enabling steady company but not a vigil, which he would have hated."
Gay passed away on November 4, 2019, aged 85.
He left behind a legacy as a presenter exceeded only by the memory of him as a husbnd to his wife, Kathleen, a father to daughters Crona and Suzy and a grandfather to Cian, Sadhbh, Kate, Saoirse and Harry.
