Shamrock Irish broadcaster's powerful tribute to Biden following presidential win goes viral across the world

Post by Kitkat Mon 09 Nov 2020, 11:40

Ireland's National broadcaster put together a fitting tribute to the newest Irish-American to take the White House, and it has now been watched across the world.

Following the news that Democrat Joe Biden had won enough Electoral College votes to win the Presidential Election, RTÉ News finished the 9pm broadcast with a video montage set to President-elect Biden reading a famous Irish poem.
Mr Biden has often quoted Heaney, and one of his final campaign videos saw him read A Cure At Troy-- a poem of hope and vision for the future as the candidate ran on a platform promising to unite the nation.
RTÉ's video took the audio of Mr Biden reading Seamus Heaney's poem and set it to footage of some of the defining moments of the President-elect's life: with his young family, saluting the coffin of his son, watching the fireworks following his acceptance speech.

Other footage showed the opposition, Donald Trump, and his supporters at the many rallies held in the lead-up to the election, as Mr Biden read the poem which promised healing and miracles.
The powerful video, posted to Twitter by RTÉ, has now been viewed more than 10 million times-- and high-profile figures across the world have been sharing the message of hope with their own followers, including CNN's Jake Tapper and The New York Times's Jodi Kantor.
Director Richard Schiff stated the montage was 'Beautiful', and actress Emmy Rossum wrote 'No, YOU'RE crying'.
Sharing to his 5 million followers, American commedian Patton Oswalt wrote: 'Oh MAN this got me', and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon encouraged her followers to 'Take a moment to listen to this'.

Shamrock Irish Joe Biden supporters in Carlingford hold parade to celebrate US election win

Post by Kitkat Mon 09 Nov 2020, 11:48

Irish Joe Biden fans gathered in Carlingford this weekend to celebrate the Democrat’s project victory over Donald Trump in the US presidential election.

The Co Louth town hosted a special event that included a socially distanced parade and a performance from the Carlingford pipe band.
They performed the familiar Irish song Fáinne Geal an Lae, which translates as the Dawning of the Day, as well as a new song written specially for Biden.
Our Local Joe celebrates the 77-year-old's election win and his family ties to Co Louth, the county his great-great-grandfather emigrated to the US from back in 1840s.
As if further proof was needed of Biden’s family connections to the area, several distant cousins of the President-elect were present during the festivities.
They included local councillor Andre McKevitt and siblings Doreen Keenan and Oisin White, who met Biden during his visit to the region in 2016.

Hundreds turned out for the event with American flags and Irish tricolours out in force alongside several cardboard cut-outs of the new president-elect.

The event was organised by the Irish for Biden Campaign, a group set up to encourage Irish people with relatives in the US to lobby them to vote for the Democrat candidate.

Paul Allen, who played a key role in the Irish for Biden Campaign, told the BBC said he was “overjoyed” with the result and the fact there will be an Irish voice in the White House.

"There has probably been no other president in US history that takes a greater in pride in their heritage than Joe Biden," he said.

"There is no doubt that Ireland now has at least two listening ears in the White House, and the potential for this is enormous, from improved relationships, US companies in Ireland, undocumented Irish, Brexit and co-operation on international policy."

Louth Fine Gael Senator John McGahon was similarly effusive, telling Breaking News that locals were "absolutely delighted" Biden was to become the 46th President of the United States.

“People are just delighted about it. It's great to have some good news in the Covid era that we find ourselves living in,” he said.

"It's really incredible that the president-elect of the United States' great-great grandfather left Carlingford Harbour in 1849 and all of these years later an ancestor of his is elected to the most powerful position in the world."

He added: "For the first time since John F Kennedy, we have a real Irish American in the White House. I know you can trace some Irish ancestry back to most presidents but JFK was an iconic Irish American president and now we have another iconic Irish American president in the form of Joe Biden.”

Locals are already planning for Biden’s triumphant return once the world returns to normality.

"I actually wrote to the president-elect yesterday inviting him back to Carlingford,” McGahon said.

“I fully accept how much he has on his plate but it would be really wonderful to have him back in north Louth at some stage during his presidency.”
