    Summary for Sunday, 30th August

    • Number of coronavirus infections globally goes over 25m - Johns Hopkins University
    • More than 842,000 have died since the pandemic began
    • India set a new record for the biggest single-day rise, with more than 78,000 new cases
    • University students' return to campus could cause new wave of virus, UK teaching union warns
    • Children's life chances at risk if parents don't send them back to school, education secretary warns
    • German leaders condemn an attempt by 'anti-corona' protesters to storm the Reichstag

Hello and welcome to our live reporting on the coronavirus pandemic around the world.
Eight months after China first reported cases of a “mysterious flu”, global cases of coronavirus have now passed 25 million.
We’ll be reporting on this milestone, as well as other stories as they happen. The other main stories so far on Sunday:

    • India has broken the world record for the highest number of new cases recorded in one day. More than 78,000 infections were reported in 24 hours
    • There’s outrage in Germany over the use of far-right and Nazi symbols at “anti-corona” demonstrations outside the parliament in Berlin. More than 300 people were arrested at protests against coronavirus restrictions on Saturday
    • Thousands have protested against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his government’s handling of the pandemic as he also faces a corruption trial
    • New restrictions come into force on Sunday in South Korea where the infection rate is alarming officials. From 9pm-5am restaurants, bars and bakeries will be take-away only in the Seoul area for at least one week. The country reported 299 new infections on Saturday

    UK morning summary

Here's a round-up of the main stories around the UK this morning:

India breaks global record for most cases in one day

As the global number of cases passes 25 million, India has set a new world record for the highest number of new infections reported in 24 hours.
The country, which is the world's second most populous with 1.3 billion people, reported 78,761 cases in one day.
It also reported 63,000 deaths from the virus since the pandemic began.
India has now recorded 3.5 million cases in total, behind Brazil and the US.
Officials say India's comparatively low rate of testing also means it is not capturing the full impact of the virus.
"Testing per million in India at 30,000 remains the second lowest in top 10 (virus-infected) countries. Mexico is lowest at about 10,000," virologist Shahid Jameel told AFP news agency.

University is 'as safe as it has ever been'

    Coronavirus - 30th August 93a25010
Prof Carl Heneghan said social distancing is key, which "can break down" in the evening on campus

University lecturers in the UK are calling for the mass return to campus to be delayed to prevent "a silent avalanche of infections", the general secretary of the UCU union, Jo Grady, told BBC Breakfast.
Larissa Kennedy, national president of the National Union of Students (NUS), added that students also want universities to avoid in-person teaching wherever possible and for more investment in high-quality remote learning.
But Prof Carl Heneghan, an Oxford University epidemiologist and practising GP, told BBC Breakfast that despite people's anxiety, "right now it is as safe as it ever has been to go back".
"If the issues change, if it becomes more risky, that’s the time when we row back," he said.
He said US campuses which have experienced outbreaks have found the transmission is not happening in lectures but "in the fraternity houses and outside where there was a significant amount of mixing going on".

Thousands attended coronavirus protests in Europe

    Coronavirus - 30th August 93336c10
Some protesters believe coronavirus is a hoax

On Saturday about 38,000 people protested in Berlin, Germany over coronavirus restrictions, with some calling the virus a hoax.
Far-right groups tried to storm the Reichstag parliament building and 300 were arrested after throwing bottles and stones at police. The demonstrators were ordered to disperse after too many participants refused to wear masks or keep a safe distance.
Protests also took place in the UK, France and Switzerland. In London's Trafalgar Square, signs reading "masks are muzzles" and "new normal = new fascism" were held up as about 1,000 people attended a rally.
In Zurich, Switzerland an estimated 1000 people who are against mask-wearing gathered.
Meanwhile in Paris 300 people denounced the government's decision to make wearing a face mask mandatory as the country struggles to contain a rising infection rate which officials on Saturday called "exponential".

'No plans' to delay Glastonbury to September 2021

    Coronavirus - 30th August 15eca810
Glastonbury crowds should be back in June 2021, organiser Emily Eavis said

Glastonbury Festival organiser Emily Eavis has said she is "still very much aiming for June" next year for the festival's return, and has no plans to push it back to September 2021.
She added that ticket sales will be delayed, however – because the festival remains sold out from this year. So few people have asked for refunds that they do not have enough tickets to resell in October, when booking normally begins, she said.
The deadline for requesting a free refund for 2020 ticket holders has been extended to January and sales will begin in April instead, Ms Eavis said.

    Algeria's lessons from The Plague

Copies of Albert Camus's classic novel The Plague has been selling well around the world

Literature fans have used the pandemic as an opportunity to dig out copies of The Plague - Albert Camus's classic novel about an outbreak of bubonic plague in Algeria under French colonial rule.
The country today is the third worst affected in Africa, with 1,475 deaths.
One doctor in Oran, where Camus's book is set, says the parallels are haunting.
"We weren't able to avoid thinking about the plague Albert Camus described during this pandemic… Most patients were very scared - there were a lot of rumours going around. Everyone was caught off-guard."
Many Algerians also accuse the authorities of exploiting the pandemic to put a halt to a large protest movement that was threatening to destabilise the government.

Police use new powers to crack down on illegal raves

    Coronavirus - 30th August A15b9e10
West Midlands Police have broken up dozens of illegal gatherings, but said this weekend's reports were mostly small house parties

New rules allowing police in England to fine the organisers of illegal raves up to £10,000 came into force ahead of the bank holiday, prompting some police forces to begin a crackdown.
Participants in illicit gatherings can also be fined, starting at £100.
But while some forces said they had seized thousands of pounds of equipment to prevent events taking place, others said the powers meant “absolutely nothing” as organisers were often too hard to identify.
"We will seize the equipment – I don’t care if you’ve hired it from someone or if it’s yours, we will break up your event," said Chief Inspector Lewis Basford from Essex Police after preventing an unlicensed music event from going ahead in Harlow.
West Midlands Police said reports from the public this weekend were dominated by smaller house parties rather than large raves, however.
Metropolitan Police Federation chairman Ken Marsh said the new powers mean "absolutely nothing" in London, as people just set up a sound system in the street and deny responsibility for it. He called for stronger powers allowing them to "close the area down".

Plague village memorial held online due to virus

    Coronavirus - 30th August Fc744110
The villagers of Eyam are often cited as a model of self-sacrifice

Each year a memorial service is held to honour the actions of the villagers of Eyam in Derbyshire, who in 1665 ago shut themselves away for more than a year to avoid spreading the plague. More than two-thirds of them died.
But this year the modern plague of coronavirus means the service cannot be held in person at Cucklet Delf, the limestone cave which villagers used as a temporary church during the outbreak of the Black Death.
Reverend Mike Gilbert said he feared that an influx of people attending the service and costume procession could risk spreading Covid-19.
An online service streamed on the parish church's Facebook page from 11:00 BST will remember the estimated 260 people who died from the Bubonic Plague more than 350 years ago – about three-quarters of the villagers.

Outrage over "unacceptable" storming of German parliament

    Coronavirus - 30th August Ea331410
Police expelled protesters using tear gas

We've been reporting on "anti-corona" protests in Berlin, Germany on Saturday where some 38,000 people gathered. Though the demo was largely peaceful, hundreds - some carrying far-right symbols - attempted to storm the German parliament, or Reichstag. They broke through barriers and came close to entering the building before police used pepper spray to push them back.
The German government has sharply condemned their actions. The Reichstag is the "symbolic centre of our democracy", Interior Minister Horst Seehofer told Bild newspaper.
"It is unacceptable to see extremists and trouble-makers use it for their own ends," he said.
"Nazi symbols as well as Reichsbürger and Imperial German flags have no place in the German Bundestag," said Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The far-right anti-Semitic Reichsbürger movement rejects the German state as a legal entity.
The Reichstag is highly symbolic in Germany. In 1933 during Adolf Hitler's rise to power, it was set on fire - an event the Nazis used as an excuse to enact wide-ranging emergency powers and suppress dissent.

False claims spreading ahead of UK's return to school

A video in Urdu is spreading false claims that children who fall sick will be removed from their parents' care, just as schools in many parts of the UK are returning.
Prof John Wright said he and colleagues in Bradford had come across several people in the community who believed the video, saying the speaker was a tabeeba - the Urdu word for doctor - although her website describes her as "a qualified practitioner of prophetic medicine" rather than a scientific doctor.
People who believe the video also say they mistrust the government after a series of missteps and U-turns during the pandemic.
"The government isn't telling the truth and everyone in power keeps changing their minds," one told Prof Wright. "First there's no Covid for kids and then there is, and then it's no masks for kids and now that's changing."
The poor timing of introducing lockdown restrictions in parts of northern England on the eve of Eid al-Adha also undermined trust, says Prof Wright.

New Zealand PM warns of more cases to come

    Coronavirus - 30th August 296f4110
Jacinda Ardern said it was necessary to "stop socialising for a time"

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced the partial easing of coronavirus restrictions in the country's largest city, Auckland - but has warned that more cases could be on the way.
Auckland was put back into lockdown two weeks ago after a cluster of new cases emerged.
"The tail of this cluster will be long," Ardern said, adding that it was "highly likely" that more infections would emerge as further testing takes place.
As some restrictions are lifted from Sunday evening, social gatherings will now be allowed, but limited to 10 people.
"I cannot stress how important this is, much of this cluster has stemmed from social gathering, if we want to stop the spread we have to stop socialising for a time," she said.
She added that face coverings will be compulsory on public transport across the country.
"If you are in Auckland, I strongly encourage you to wear a mask, if you take public transport you must wear a mask."
New Zealand has registered just two new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, both linked to clusters in Auckland.

Police condemn 'irresponsible' Welsh village rave

People 14 miles away from the village of Banwen said they could hear the music

While police in England seize sound equipment as new powers to crack down on illegal raves come into force, officers in Wales have condemned an "irresponsible" party involving thousands of people near the Brecon Beacons.
South Wales Police said they were responding to calls about the rave at the village of Banwen, on the edge of the national park, and reminding organisers and attendees of their obligations under coronavirus restrictions - which ban any gathering of over 30 people.
"To the parents or guardians of young people, we would ask you ensure that you know where [your] children are and what they are doing," police said in a Facebook post.
Jamie Bowen, who lives 14 miles from the rave, said he could hear "really loud music" from 03:00 BST.

    What's happening in the UK?

Here are the main headlines in the UK this afternoon:

More than 500 people at illegal rave

More than 500 people are at a rave in a Norfolk forest, after new lockdown measures over illegal gatherings came into force.
Police said it was "extremely disappointing to see" the unlicensed music event, which has been going on in Thetford Forest since about 23:20 BST Saturday.
Officers found the rave, near the English Heritage site Grime's Graves, after a member of the public reported seeing large numbers of cars queuing to access a fire route.
Assistant Chief Constable Nick Davison said it was "clear this is a well-established and planned event which is due to go on until tomorrow".
"Coronavirus is still with us and continues to be a real threat so it's extremely disappointing to see these types of events taking place when the rest of our communities are doing everything they can to help stop the spread of the virus," he said.
Since Friday police in England have been able to fine organisers of illegal gatherings of more than 30 people, such as raves, up to £10,000.

Great-grandmother returns home after five months fighting virus

A 73-year-old great-grandmother who spent more than five months ill with coronavirus at a hospital and nursing home in Brooklyn has finally returned home, US media report.
Marie Jean-Pierre was admitted to hospital on 21 March with a high temperature and shortness of breath.
As part of her treatment, she required a tracheotomy - a procedure where the surgeon makes a hole in the air passage to allow the patient to breathe - and had to be placed on a ventilator.
Her daughter, Marie Delus, told CNN that her mother "didn't want to be on the ventilator".
"She was fighting every step of the way. She was fighting the doctors, she was fighting the nurses," she said.
Jean-Pierre could only see her family from behind a glass screen while undergoing treatment. As her condition improved, she had to relearn how to walk and talk.
She has six children, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, she told CNN.

Three deaths reported in hospitals in England

A further three people who tested positive for coronavirus have died at hospitals in England, NHS England said today.
It brings the total number of confirmed deaths in hospitals in England to 29,550.
The patients, aged between 51 and 93, had underlying conditions and died on or after 26 August.

No deaths reported in Scotland or Wales

A total of 123 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours in Scotland, the highest figure in more than a week.
But no new deaths have been reported among those with a positive result, and the number of people in hospital dropped to 251, down seven.
Public Health Wales also reported no deaths linked to coronavirus.
There have been 56 new cases in Wales in the past 24 hours, according to the latest statistics.
UK-wide figures are due to be published later.

How Covid-19 conspiracies are merging with QAnon

Marianna Spring - Disinformation and social media reporter
    Coronavirus - 30th August 72f36b10
"Save Our Children", a slogan used by the QAnon child trafficking conspiracy theory, appeared at a London coronavirus protest

False claims that coronavirus is a hoax being used to cover up child trafficking are being shared on social media.
There is zero evidence to support this suggestion - and it appears to be part of the merging of coronavirus and QAnon conspiracy theories.
Throughout the pandemic, false claims suggesting coronavirus is a hoax and that a vaccine will be used to microchip the population have spread online. Yesterday they appeared on placards at the demonstration in Central London.
But now those unfounded theories appear to be merging with QAnon, whose supporters were also in attendance at yesterday’s protest. QAnon is a wide-ranging, unfounded conspiracy theory that says US President Donald Trump is waging a secret war against elite Satan-worshipping paedophiles in government, business and the media.
QAnon supporters have also promoted coronavirus conspiracy theories, including about vaccines. In recent weeks, the movement has gained traction in the UK using the #saveourchildren hashtag.
Various charities, which work to fight child exploitation and sexual abuse, have come out to condemn the QAnon conspiracy theory, which exploits this cause to plug unfounded and dangerous claims.

More than 1,300 test positive at US university

Many US university students have been doing remote-learning for some time, but a number of institutions opened their doors for teaching on campus. A number have seen outbreaks of coronavirus - now more than 1,200 students and 166 staff have tested positive for coronavirus at the University of Alabama.
"The rise we've seen in recent days is unacceptable, and if unchecked, threatens our ability to complete the rest of the semester on campus," University of Alabama president Stuart Bell said at a press conference this week. "Now is the time for action."
Students in recent days have shared photographs of crowded bars and queues to enter venues in Tuscaloosa, where the university is based. According to ABC, the mayor closed bars from 24 August to 8 September in response.

Stephen Hahn said he would consider "emergency use authorisation" for vaccines put forward for approval

The top doctor at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said he is prepared to authorise a Covid-19 vaccine before the final stage of clinical testing is complete.
In an interview with the Financial Times newspaper, Stephen Hahn said he was willing to fast-track a vaccine put forward for approval as long as officials believed the benefits outweighed the risks.
"We make an adjudication of their [the manufacturer's] application," Hahn said, adding: "If they do that before the end of Phase III, we may find that appropriate. We may find that inappropriate, we will make a determination."
Hahn went on to tell the newspaper that the FDA's "emergency use authorisation" was not the same as giving full approval for the use of a vaccine.
The third phase of clinical trials can often involve thousands of participants and can last several years.

Up to 3,000 people are thought to have travelled from across the UK to attend an illegal rave in Banwen, in Neath Port Talbot, say South Wales Police.

"I would like to again remind people of their obligations under the current coronavirus legislation and the overarching goal for everyone to take personal responsibility by following Welsh government regulations to keep Wales safe."
The Welsh government's restrictions allow for up to 30 people to meet outdoors.
"Unlawfully parked cars will be dealt with and people who continue, despite our advice, to try and attend this illegal event area being turned away," Ch Supt Belcher adds.

Madrid's doctors warn health system 'could collapse'

The health system in the Spanish capital, Madrid, will face a "new collapse" if the government fails to act, a group of 450 doctors across four organisations is warning.
Earlier this year, Madrid's public health system experienced a shocking collapse as it was overwhelmed by Spain's wave of coronavirus cases. Many hospitals stopped sending ambulances to care homes - residents died undiagnosed and with little treatment. According to official statistics, 28,813 people are confirmed to have died from the virus in the country.
In a letter, the medics say that coronavirus cases are rising in the city, as well as hospital admissions and numbers of people in intensive care. Hospitals' ability to care for non-Covid-19 patients is being compromised, they warn.
The letter says that at least 20% more health workers are needed as well as many more contact tracers to battle the rising infections.

Cases up again in Australia's Victoria state

The Australian state of Victoria has recorded 114 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours - just a day after cases dropped below 100 for the first time since early July.
Eleven deaths were also confirmed in the state - the worst-hit in Australia - over the past day.
State Premier Daniel Andrews last week said that a recent reduction in cases raised hope that the spread of the virus was slowing and strict lockdown restrictions could be eased next month.
The state capital, Melbourne, has been in lockdown for over a month, but even stricter "stage four" measures - including a night-time curfew between the hours of 20:00 and 05:00 - were imposed on 2 August.
Officials have now warned that any easing of measures is likely to be gradual.

The state, the most populous in the US, recorded 3,696 additional cases yesterday, bringing the total to 702,011.
On Friday, California Governor Gavin Newsom said he would take a cautious approach with the easing of restrictions in the state.
"We're going to be more stubborn this time," he said, as he announced that some counties could allow more non-essential businesses to reopen from tomorrow - under limited circumstances.
Counties would be able to ease restrictions gradually under a new four-tier system, he said.
The rules range from restaurants only being permitted to serve food outdoors (tier one) to restaurants serving customers indoors at 50% capacity while continuing to observe social distancing measures (tier four).
In mid-July, Newsom ordered a sweeping shutdown of indoor businesses like restaurants, movie theatres, wineries, and museums.
