    • The elderly leader of a South Korean sect has been arrested for allegedly obstructing a tracing investigation
    • Brazil's president has told citizens that 'nearly everyone' in the country will catch the coronavirus

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the coronavirus pandemic. Our teams from around the world are again ready to bring you the latest developments.Let's kick off with a summary of the latest top stories.

    • As it stands there have been 17.5 million infections and 679,000 deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic globally, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University
    • Dr Anthony Fauci, America’s top infectious disease expert, has told the US Congress he was “cautiously optimistic” that a “safe and effective” vaccine against coronavirus will be ready for use by the end of 2020
    • Mexico’s coronavirus death toll has surpassed 46,000, overtaking the UK as the country with the third-highest number of Covid-19 fatalities in the world
    • People shielding against coronavirus can now leave their home and return to work in England, but a further easing of lockdown restrictions has been postponed
    • The leader of a secretive South Korean sect at the centre of the country’s early coronavirus outbreak was arrested on Saturday for allegedly hindering the government’s effort to contain the epidemic
    • A second person has died with Covid-19 in Vietnam, a day after the first coronavirus-related fatality in the country, which prided itself on its effective containment strategy early in the pandemic
    • Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro told crowds on Friday that “almost all of you will catch” coronavirus one day, in comments that echo his tendency to play down the seriousness of the disease

Mexico’s death toll overtakes the UK’s

The coronavirus death toll in Mexico has surpassed that of the UK, as the country recorded an 688 additional deaths, bringing the total to 46,688.
Mexico, one of Latin America’s worst-affected countries, now has the third-highest coronavirus death toll in the world after Brazil and the US.
Coronavirus infections continue to rise in Mexico, with 8,458 new cases on Friday taking the total to 424,637.
Local authorities have previously said they believe the real number of infections is likely to be significantly higher than those reported.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is eager to restart the country's flagging economy, but the ongoing surge in cases has scuppered his phased plan to lift restrictions, announced in May.

    South Korean sect leader arrested

The leader of a secretive South Korean sect at the centre of the country’s early coronavirus outbreak was arrested on Saturday for allegedly hindering the government’s effort to contain the epidemic.
Lee Man-hee, the founder of the Shincheonji Church, has been accused of withholding information from authorities during the peak of the outbreak.
The church, a fringe Christian group, has been linked to more than 5,200 coronavirus infections, or 36% of the total number of cases in the country.
Lee allegedly hid details on members and their meeting places as authorities tried to trace infection routes in February, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.
Lee Man-hee, who founded the Shincheonji Church in 1984, claims he is the second coming of Jesus Christ and identifies as "the promised pastor" mentioned in the Bible.
The group has previously apologised for its role in the outbreak and said it was co-operating with authorities.
Find out more about the sect by watching the video below.

Shielding ends in the UK but lockdown easing put on hold

Turning to the UK, the government has told people who are most at risk from coronavirus they no longer have to shield at home and can return to work.
More than two million at high risk will no longer need to isolate in most of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
However, the UK government’s plan to ease a host of lockdown restrictions has been dealt a blow by rising infections in parts of the country.
On Friday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson applied the brakes to easing restrictions further and as some businesses remain closed.
England's chief medical officer, professor Chris Whitty, warned the UK may have reached the limit on lifting lockdown as cases rise.
He said the "idea that we can open up everything and keep the virus under control" was wrong.

    Vietnam reports second death

A second person has died with Covid-19 in Vietnam, a day after the first coronavirus-related fatality in the country, whose containment strategy was considered highly effective early in the pandemic.
The two people, men aged 61 and 70, reportedly died in a hospital in Da Nang, the city at the epicentre of Vietnam’s outbreak.
Both of the patients had underlying health conditions, according to Vietnamese media.
There had been no new locally transmitted infections for more than three months, before an outbreak was reported in the resort of Da Nang earlier this week.
The country, which has a population of around 95 million, has reported just 546 cases since the pandemic began.
The country received praise for both its timely efforts to contain the virus and for the care it was able to offer a Scottish pilot who spent two months in a coma after developing Covid-19.

India sees highest daily jump in cases

Jill McGivering - South Asia editor
Officials in India say the country recorded more than 57,000 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours - the highest daily total to date.
This was the third day in a row that India has recorded more than 50,000 new cases of coronavirus, as daily totals continue to climb steadily.
Maharashtra - home to the financial capital, Mumbai - is still the worst affected state.
But there are rapid rises in many other parts of the country too - including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Assam.
India's testing programme has expanded - but claims are being investigated that in the city of Pune in July, hundreds of suspected cases were never added to official figures because tests were never carried out.

Unemployment benefits end for millions of Americans

The coronavirus pandemic has taken a huge toll on the global economy, with many people and businesses needing financial support.
In the US, a coronavirus aid bill has given millions of hard-up Americans an essential lifeline to weather the worst of the Covid-19 storm.
But on Friday night, unemployment benefits that were part of that aid expired, as the US Congress was unable to reach consensus on a new relief package.
That means payments of $600 (£458) a week to millions of people have ended overnight.
US President Donald Trump has blamed the Democrats for the impasse. Democratic leaders, meanwhile, said a White House proposal to extend the pay-out for seven days was worthless.
Republicans want a smaller relief plan than one passed by the Democrat-controlled House. Talks are set to continue on Saturday, so we’ll bring you the latest when we know more.

How much progress has been made on a Covid-19 vaccine?

As we reported earlier, America’s top infectious diseases expert has expressed hope that a Covid-19 vaccine will be ready for use this year.
But how much progress has been made on developing a vaccine?
Analysis by BBC health correspondent James Gallagher showed about 140 are in early development, and around two dozen are now being tested on people in clinical trials.
    These efforts include:

Face it - you will probably get Covid-19, Bolsonaro says

Everyone will probably contract coronavirus at some point, so face up to it, Brazil’s right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro has told his compatriots.
Bolsonaro tested positive for coronavirus earlier this month and on Friday said he was taking antibiotics for a lung infection.
"I knew I was going to catch it someday, as I think unfortunately nearly everyone here is going to catch it eventually,” he told reporters during a visit to the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.
“What are you afraid of? Face up to it," he said. "I regret the deaths. But people die every day, from lots of things. That's life."
Bolsonaro has repeatedly called Covid-19 a "little flu", saying he would not be seriously affected. He has opposed lockdowns, which he says hurt the economy.
Brazil has the second-highest number of Covid-19 cases and deaths in the world, after the US.

Which of England's lockdown rules are not being eased?

Earlier we told you how people in many parts of the UK will no longer have to shield from today, while other lockdown measures will not be eased due to rising infection rates in England.
Several changes, which were supposed to come into force today, have been delayed until 15 August at the earliest:

    • Indoor venues such as casinos, ice skating rinks and bowling alleys, which were due to reopen, will remain closed
    • Live indoor theatre and concerts, which were due to resume with socially distanced audiences, will not take place
    • Pilot sporting events allowing limited numbers of spectators at Goodwood, the Crucible and The Oval, will not go ahead
    • Wedding receptions with up to 30 guests cannot yet happen

Separately, face coverings will be compulsory in more indoor settings where people are likely to come into contact with people they do not know, such as museums and places of worship - from next weekend. They are already required in shops, banks, airports and other indoor transport hubs.
The prime minister said the rules for face coverings would be enforceable in law from 8 August.
Read more: All you need to know about the new measures

And what about the new restrictions in parts of northern England?

After a spike in coronavirus cases, some restrictions were reintroduced for Greater Manchester, east Lancashire and parts of West Yorkshire on Friday.
The health secretary said data showed the rise was down to households meeting, but not following social distancing.
In response, new rules mean people from separate households in these areas are not allowed to mix with each other in their homes or gardens, or in pubs and restaurants.

People will only be able to visit such hospitality venues with members of their own household.
Matt Hancock said the move was not an attempt to curtail Eid celebrations - due to start this weekend - after Miqdaad Versi, from the Muslim Council of Britain, said the restrictions were likely to have a "large impact" on festivities.

In Leicester, where a local lockdown has been in force for several weeks, restrictions are also in place on household visits.
However, from 3 August pubs and restaurants in the city will be allowed to reopen.

How Leicester's Muslims are marking Eid in lockdown

Sandish Shoker - BBC News, East Midlands
    Coronavirus - 1st AUGUST Cfa47110
Jawaahir Daahir said Eid is usually a time for families to plan days out and get-togethers

When Muslims are describing Eid celebrations to people from other faiths, many will say it's the equivalent of Christmas - a noisy, joyous festival of prayer, present-giving and fun with friends and family.
But in Leicester - one of Britain's most vibrant multi-cultural cities - this year's Eid al-Adha is looking rather more muted.
With the city still in lockdown and restrictions not due to be lifted until Monday, everyone has been encouraged to stay at home.
Usually, Jawaahir Daahir's house would be full of family members right now.
After going to the mosque for prayer, there would be hugs with friends, sweets for the children and an array of specially-prepared dishes and presents at home.
Instead, she had to explain to her three-year-old grandson Kamil that she wouldn't be seeing him.
"He was on the phone telling me 'I want to come to your house grandma, I want to come to your house' and I was telling him 'you can't come right now' because I live in Leicester," she says.
"It's so sad - what can you say? It is so hard for the children to understand."

    Okinawa declares state of emergency

The Japanese prefecture of Okinawa has declared a state of emergency following a surge in coronavirus infections.
The regional governor, Denny Tamaki, called on people to remain at home for the next two weeks.
He said hospitals were being overwhelmed by the surge.
"A dramatic surge in infections has been seen, and a collapse of the health-care system must be prevented at all costs,” Tamaki said, local media reported.
Okinawa reported 71 new cases on Friday, bringing the total to just under 400. More than half of those infected are US military personnel based on the island.
The 15-day state of emergency will come into effect on 1 August, Tamaki said.
On the Japanese mainland, some restrictions are being reintroduced next week after the number of daily cases reached a new record.

Poland sees record daily rise in cases

    Coronavirus - 1st AUGUST D72f8a10
Poland has fared better than many European countries, but cases are rising

Poland recorded its highest number of new Covid-19 cases for a third day in a row on Saturday, with 658 in the previous 24 hours, its health ministry has said.
The previous daily highs were 657 on Friday and 615 on Thursday.
The recent spike in new cases has been mainly caused by outbreaks at three Silesian coal mines and among miners’ families in southern Poland.
Health minister Lukasz Szumowski said on Saturday that restrictions may be reimposed on weddings, where currently up to 150 guests are allowed.
The totals so far are 46,346 cases, 1,721 deaths and 34,374 recoveries in Poland.
Poland has recorded much fewer cases and deaths than many western European countries.

    ‘Corona-denier’ protesters descend on Berlin

Damien McGuinness - BBC News, Berlin
    Coronavirus - 1st AUGUST 0abe0c10
Demonstrators held banners reading "Stop! It is enough! Enough is enough"

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the German capital Berlin to take part in dozens of protests over the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Some are right-wing extremists, with far-right flags and symbols. Others are conspiracy theorists, who don’t believe Covid-19 even exists.
And some of the demonstrators are people who simply object to the German government’s approach to the pandemic.
What they all have in common is that they want an end to the government’s measures to stop the spread of coronavirus.
    Coronavirus - 1st AUGUST 22089e11
Around 20,000 people were estimated to show up for the protests

The so-called corona deniers have come in specially organised coaches from all over the country, and are calling their demonstration “The Day of Freedom”.
Counter-protests against right-wing extremism were planned, but so far the mood is peaceful.
Hardly anyone is wearing a face-covering or keeping the required distance from other protesters, despite police urging them to do so.
What’s not clear, is what the police can do if such large numbers of people refuse to stick to the rules.

Spain tracks Covid-19 - in the sewers

Covid-19 has been called the “invisible enemy” by world leaders. Health experts say that to defeat the disease we need to find out where it is by tracking and tracing it.
In the Spanish city of Valencia, a new track-and-trace method has been pioneered by a team of engineers and scientists.
It involves collecting human waste in sewers and testing those samples for traces of Covid-19.

Mexican president will wear mask ‘when there is no corruption’

    Coronavirus - 1st AUGUST 621f1110
Obrador made the comments during a news conference on Friday

The president of Mexico has said he will only wear a face mask when corruption has been completely stamped out in the country.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador made the apparently sarcastic pledge on Friday, as Mexico became the country with the third-highest coronavirus death toll in the world.
“You know when I’m going to put on a mask? When there is no corruption. Then I’ll put on a mask and I’ll stop talking,” Obrador told reporters.
Corruption has long cast a shadow over Mexico’s political system. Transparency International's most recent corruption index lists Mexico at 130th in the world, with a score of 29 out of 100.
Obrador, who has appeared sceptical of face masks, has been criticised for his response to the Mexico’s coronavirus epidemic.
Critics say Obrador’s government was slow to impose lockdown measures and has lifted them too quickly.

Swiss mountains light up for Covid-safe national day

    Coronavirus - 1st AUGUST 5a2fac10

Switzerland has marked its national day with a pyrotechnics display at a section of mountains in the Alps, wowing spectators while complying with social-distancing rules.
Switzerland’s national day is held every year on 1 August to celebrate the date of the central European nation’s founding in 1291.
The day is usually celebrated with fireworks displays, but in times of social distancing, event organisers had to be creative this year.
More than 100 kg (220 lbs) of magnesium powder were ignited at the mountain chains of Veisivi and Dent de Perroc on Friday night.

The show, which illuminated 12 sq km (4.6 sq miles) of the mountains, was visible from 20 km (12 miles) away.
"It is like 100 million candles being lit on the mountains and gives them a lovely warm glow," organiser Jacques Morard told Reuters news agency.
The Swiss government has banned gatherings of more than 1,000 people to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.
But on Friday, social distancing was reportedly observed as thousands watched the three-minute-long display in the Evolene valley.

Hard decisions ahead as October second wave probable - UK scientific adviser

There will probably be a second wave of coronavirus in October in the UK and "some hard decisions will need to be made about what restrictions need to be reintroduced", a scientist advising the government says.
Prof Calum Semple, who is a member of the advisory group Sage, made the comments after another scientific adviser said pubs or "other activities" in England may need to close to allow schools to reopen next month.
Prof Semple, from the University of Liverpool, says whether pubs or the hospitality sector will be "taking a hit in preference to education will be a political decision."

Vietnam's Da Nang 'to test entire population'

The beach resort city of Da Nang in Vietnam plans to test its entire population for coronavirus, Reuters news agency reports.
Local authorities made the announcement as 40 new cases linked to the city were reported across the country.
This brings the total number of cases in Vietnam to 586, while three deaths have been reported since Friday.
Da Nang has a population of about 1.1m people.
Local medical officials have conducted more than 8,000 tests since a new outbreak was detected in the city - popular with domestic tourists - on July 25.
Authorities said testing capacity will now be increased to 8,000 to 10,000 per day.

    A bleak situation in Mexico

Will Grant - Mexico and Central America correspondent for BBC News
Seeing Mexico rise to the third-highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in the world reflects just how bad most Mexicans feel the situation in their country is.
Surpassing the UK in that classification, Mexico has now registered 46,688 deaths linked to Covid-19, with only the US and Brazil having had more.
The situation is bleak in Mexico in a number of ways. First, testing remains low with the government unconvinced of its importance. Only the most severe cases are tested and contact tracing is also poor.
Furthermore, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador appears to continue to pour scorn on the use of face masks to combat the spread of the virus.
His critics accuse him of taking a cavalier attitude to the virus and say his government’s response has been wholly inadequate.
The government claims long-standing issues in Mexican society - such as high levels of diabetes and obesity - are partly the reason for the large number of cases.

The WTA said the tournament would go ahead as planned

An unnamed player has tested positive for coronavirus shortly before the start of the Palermo Ladies Open - an event that marks the return of professional tennis for the first time since March.
The player, who was showing no symptoms of coronavirus, has withdrawn from the contest.
The Women's Tennis Association said the tournament would still go ahead as planned, adding that anyone who had come into contact with the player would undergo testing.
In June, a number of players contracted coronavirus while taking part in the Adria Tour event, organised by world number one Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic apologised, saying it had been "too soon" to stage the tournament.
