These centres offer tremendous support and care for cancer sufferers and their families and friends.  There are now many of these wonderful Centres throughout the UK, with a new one just recently opened at Barts Hospital.

This is the Newsletter from the West London one (attached to Charing Cross Hospital) - where I attended regularly following my second diagnosis/treatment.  Kudos to all the wonderful staff, volunteers and professionals involved in running these very special places.  happyheart

As we enter our tenth year here at the West London Centre, with our gardens in full bloom and our orange walls glowing in the sun (most of the time!), we are looking forward to welcoming our new Centre Head Sinead Cope, who comes to us in July from Charing Cross Hospital.

At an exciting time for the Centre, with new chapters beginning and new faces in the team, we will of course be keeping our regular programme of support.

During the summer we will also be holding some informal evening events plus a very special Maggie’s to Maggie’s walk planned from Maggie's West London to the new Maggie's Barts. Keep up with all our events on Facebook or visit our website.

We hope you enjoy reading about what’s coming up and what has been going on, including a hugely fond farewell to Centre Head, Bernie, at our party on Friday 28 April.

    Best wishes,
    The Maggie's West London team

A very welcome new online community forum run by Maggie's Cancer Care Centres:

Our online community is a space for anyone with or worried about cancer to connect with others in similar situations to share experiences and ask questions. It's available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    www   https://community.maggiescentres.org/home

Maggie's Drop-in Centre, attached to Charing Cross Hospital, was a real help to me during and after my second cancer diagnosis and treatment, in 2009.  It was my excellent oncologist consultant at the time, Carlo Palmieri who told me about it, as he himself had been very much involved in setting it up and helping voluntarily with the everyday running.  It had not existed when I was going through my first cancer in 2004 (treatment at Charing Cross) - my radiotherapy sessions at that time were every day (bar weekends) for eight weeks, but what was on offer there at that time was 3 days a week straight after the gruelling RT session, if you had requested you could go over to another part of the hospital and get a lovely after-radiotherapy relaxing aromatherapy massage, or Indian head massage or Reflexology session, all offered by professional volunteers who gave freely of their time to help those going through their various cancer ordeals, some of which were terminal patients.  I met and made friends with many of those folk during that time.  These wonderful caring volunteers who had given up their time and expertise made such a difference to so many people's lives, as well as their families and friends.  Unsung heroes for sure.  It is those same people who are now involved in the running of the Maggie's Cancer Care Centre there - although my Oncologist is no longer there as he is now the leading research professor at the Breast Cancer Research centre at Liverpool University.
He is also very much involved with an exciting new pioneering breast cancer drug trial being undertaken there.
Based at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Prof Carlo Palmieri, who is leading the research into the drug – called irosustat – said if it is proven to be effective it could have a “big impact” on future treatment for a disease which affects tens of thousands of women in the UK and across the world.

If you or anyone you know is going through cancer and its many related problems:

Notification from Maggie's Cancer Care Centre - 19th March 2020

    Dear Friend,
We’re here in the centre continuing to support people with cancer at this very difficult time. Our priority now is to help visitors and our colleagues in the NHS in the best way we possibly can.
We know that people with cancer have a lot of anxieties and questions right now. We will remain open and you can come in and talk about how you are feeling. Our Benefits Advisors, Psychologists and Cancer Support Specialists are here.
We are though stopping our group sessions just for the moment.
You can also get our one-to-one support on the phone, via FaceTime or Skype. Ring the centre or 0300 123 1801 or email enquiries@maggies.org
Our online community is here too, with blogs and information on managing anxiety, what to do if you are self-isolating and benefits advice.
We're taking every precaution to keep our centres super clean, which includes regular antibacterial cleaing of surfaces and rigorous handwashing by all of us. To read more about the steps we are taking please visit our website.
Like many we've been hard hit by much of our fundraising activity being halted but we will continue to help people with cancer in the best possible way.
Thank you for supporting Maggie’s and being with us in these testing times.
    Best wishes,
    Sinead, Centre Head
